172 ph1 iceberg to 182ff?

Im going to get shouted at for not searching but whats a forum for? been on cliosport as Domvalver before, owned a naples 16v for 5yrs and my current 172 ph1 iceberg for 4yrs. Question is I fancy a 182FF in arctic blue but am torn as to whether I will regret it. Ive read about missing the cable throttle and 182s being less raw. My 172 is very clean fsh on 65k and I dont want to go backwards as it were on mileage or condition. Am I being unrealistic with a £4000 budget and all belts pulleys done? Sorry once again but searching never quite answers my question. Dom

From experience, apart from the cable throttle I preferred the Ph-2 to the Ph-1. Not quite the same situation as you as I previously owned a 172 Cup but given the choice I'd definitely pick a ph-2 over the ph-1.

I would test drive one or rather I will but there is none near me for sale at the moment, they surely dont drive that differently do they? except tyres do they have the same running costs?

More the aesthetics for me personally. There's not a massive difference in the drive through out the whole range. Cup just felt a little rawer.

You'll probably find the Ph-1 a little more economical, reading on here and speaking to people with 182s they tend to be a little thirstier. Biggest thing is what you've mentioned, tyre prices. Also depending on which year Ph-1 you get, some of them fall in to the old tax bracket, so tax is a bit cheaper.

yeah already on the heavy tax as I have a late Y reg, main thing for me is aesthetics too and a younger car -not that mine is so clean for its age which is part of the niggling regret thing. Thanks for the input though, its helps to firm up my ideas. Dom

Fuel economy was 10-15mpg worse. Stupid electronic throttle was annoying as hell.

Tyres are more expensive and the ride is not as nice as the 15's on the ph1.

Aside from that, they're basically exactly the same car but you're £3k down.

For that to be the case then there HAS to have been something wrong with it. You might get 2-3 mpg more but thats about it.

I keep thinking about trading up for a 182 then thinking what's the point in spending more money. Not sure if I'd want a trophy for being a bit better or just a change in colour/slightly newer.
So far I keep resisting after all they're just more of the same to drive.

Nope. Driven a few Ph2's and can't even get close to my old ph1.

Drove all the way to Manchester in the OH's old 182 and I could only just see 40 being ridiculously cautious.

There's enough MPG threads on CS already. Ph1s are generally high 30s to high 40s, Ph2s are 30-40. Go have a look

I've commented on them more than enough times thaks. Seen 47 on a run in mine when trying. 10-15 is quite an exaggeration imo.

My trip always sits around 43mpg but I dont believe that to be honest. I do feel my car was such a steal when I got it(£2995 on 43k fsh 3yrs ago like new) and it has never let me down but at 11 it is bound to start needing money spending sooner or later like my 16v had begun to at 15yrs. Still I think the searching is as exciting as actually buying a new car

My logic was sell my ph1 on 65k for say 1500 put another 1500-2000 to it and get a newer lower mileage car in a colour i prefer....I think

I've got a 172 Cup had it a year and had no problems. I tested about 4 other cups and a ph1, I have to admit I also wonder if I should have saved myself some cash and got the ph1. A lot of people say the ph2 just looks like a normal Clio which I'd agree with. Drive is more instant in the ph1. Interestingly on a convoy to goodwood last year of all the ph1s and ph2s in standard form there's nothing in the performance unless it's running badly.

I have owned a 182 cup and now a ph1 172.

I would just stick with what you have. I did prefer the standard cup suspension on the 182 compared to the ph1 172 suspension but if you have something else on the 172 then its improved anyway. I will say that i am abit picky and I always prefer a stiffer ride and after sitting in my g.fs mini the last 4 months the 172 feels very soft.

I had a 182 cup ages ago for a total of four weeks, two of which was in the showroom. Had my ph1 for 18 months, says it all really. Although.... If I was doing more miles I'd buy a Shi%%er and keep mine.
