172 ph1 induction kits: ITG vs Viper – which is best????

Looking at an induction kit for my new 172 ph1, shopping around the ITG and Pipercross Viper seam to be the best ones, but which is best???? Opinions please???

Power really - the plan is to get and induction kit then ktec sportscat and exhaust system and lower it then either RR'd and ECU set up that way or an RS Tuning kit and do it myself.

Ive tried a few and Ive found that if you want improved airflow: an espace or standard airbox with renault filter and improved cold air feeds is best.

  VRS
if you have the money, itg is the nuts

if not then knock up a makeshift with a v6 box out of an espace, its the next best thing :)

Got a Simota Carbon on the cheap. Had it on my ph2 RS but I think its for a ph1. I'm in Grantham at the mo until Friday nite, then off to Germany. Can meet you in Melton and show you it if you want. Got bugger all else to do. Up to you...

Airbox is crap, how many times ...... :clown: :quiet:

If you dont belive me theres a test with open IK vs Airbox vs Viper in one of the Ford mags that confirms it also.

Viper is better than the air box with panel, proven

Never looked tbh. Saw the feature in Performance Ford or Fast Ford, cant remember which, last week in Smiths. Tested on a V6 Mondeo ST

Surely it depends on the car?

Yeah it does but it also backs up the theory that Vipers arnt as crap as some folk make out in terms of performance and temps vs the airbox

Thing is, no two cars are the same plus it all depends on how folk set a IK up, ie has it been mapped? is it in conjunction with other mods? have they put a cold air feed to it etc etc etc etc

Agree with this 100% Especially with a PH1 airbox save some money and just upgrade to an ITG panel filter and better cold air feeds.

If you want a deeper induction note get an espace v6 box which is the same shape with one big inlet instead of two. There is a guide on this in the guides section of the forum.

Matched Inlets will give you much better gains than an indution kit.

So dont waste £400 in a ITG Max and just get the filter? As for feeds whats best to get then?

You can't really apply the results of what was tested in a Ford magazine since that the car tested was completely different!! Still IMO the gains, if any, doesn't warrent the cost a Viper/ BMC/ITG etc. My proof of this is that when I had my car remapped on a RR with standard airbox with better CAFs and samco induction pipe, it gained just 1bhp when the airbox was removed. I can't see how these aftermarket filters could achieve better results than a filter free unrestricted airflow.

I've just looked through some of the ford mags and saw a test using an escort RS Turbo with standard airbox with panel filter/ open IK/ PX viper. But they only tested intake temps. The viper won, but purely on the fact that it had a CAF, where as the others didn't and there positioned in a pretty cr#p position compared to the clios.

I'd recommend keeping your standard airbox and fitted a panel filter with better CAF. I've used the V6 espace airbox with 1 large CAF from the foglight, and going to be fitting a silicone bend and panel filter soon instead of a standard paper filter.

I can't justify spending £££'s on a IK unless your going to go the whole hog and get manifolds and head matched, and a live remap to suit

You can either take out a foglight and run a big one from there to whatever you decide to have or re-route behind the underlight bumper grille near where the standard ones go(see my guide in the guides section).

the pipe in front of the 2 inlets does is that part of the setup? i.e does it run to the drivers side to draw in even more air?

So do you run all this into the standard airbox with an ITG filter and a samco hose from the box to the engine then?

But if i was planning a remap sometime in the future would i be better off geting an IK or going down the DIY route???

Before we had the ITG on my cup, gaz had a viper on it, and it was poor, there was loads of s**t in the throttle body that it hadnt filtered, fine gritty crap. after that it got binned!

The pipe is just part of the loom. The 2 70mm pipes go straight to the standard box. I had a ITG at the time but went back to the renault filter as it was less restrictive.

The only beniefit with the itg was that it was cleanable. DIY route is much more fun and cheaper.

To summarise save your money for getting your inlets matched and have some fun going down the DIY route!!

Yeah but your map will have been all over the shop as there was zero restriction and god knows what tempreture airflow compared to when the airbox was on. If youd a had it mapped with no airbox then it might have been a different story.

Also that test dosent gauge which filters are more / less restrictive than others and the heat soak potential plus the flow rates.

It was properly remapped without the airbox to "simulate" what I would get if fitted with an induction kit and it would be the freest flowing filter since there were no filters attached. Heat soak wasn't an issue since the car was sitting in front of huge funnel that channeled cold air from outside courtesy of a couple of huge fans. The guys at perfect touch (www.perfect-touch.co.uk) know what they're doing since they tune and race their own skylines.

You took your airbox off, had basically just a open TB and had the car mapped that way just to ''simulate''?? Car fully mapped with no airbox on??

Sorry matey, i dont belive one word of it because it takes at least a hour plus to map specific (non generic), had mine done and it took roughly 5 hours!!, plus the large expense of it all.
No way would a normal member of the public go to all that trouble and expense. Yes take the airbox off and have it rolling roaded, but not to have it mapped that way when its off

Just for info I have a phase 1 with an ITG filter in the satndard airbox using some 70mm ducting. Feels stronger in midrange than standard and sounds like this! http://s281.photobucket.com/albums/kk224/OllieC172/Clio 1/?action=view&current=MOV01080.flv

Hope that gives you something to go on!

Cheers ollie, sounds sweet! now if someone would just post a vid n some info with a ITG Maxogen i'll be sorted! lol

No worries! I have had a look and cant seem to find a Maxogen vid- Try Youtube or Streetfire.net.

Good luck!
