172 problem

  Hondata'd EP3 Type R
My 172 has suddenly lost alot of power, when idle it is running very lumpy. Its juddering badly when driving normally, stutters as if there is no power what so ever. When i put my foot to floor it hesitates. for e.g. I find when driving on a normal flat road at say 30mph in 3rd im having to shift down just so i can stop the car shaking as if its going to cut out on me, when it is usually more than confortable with this. i have also noticed that when driving as economically as possible i can usually achieve 31-35mpg, whereas i tried this today and struggled to get 20mpg :S any help will be very greatfully received thanks in advance. . .

I had this on my cup last year thought it was the coilpack but it turned out to be the plugs and it had done 40k think the 72k replacement for plugs is a little far fetched. Worth checking anyway!!

hi keith, msn me if you need any help with it.

whats the millage on it and when was it serviced?

not using the proper NGK plugs in it can cause all sorts of problems with these cars, the genuine recomended renault plugs are around £15 per plug from renault and i beleive they are around 72k or 5 years what ever comes first but as well doing them at 2 years or so for the sake of an extra £60 on a service.

do you know anyone with a 172/182 around you that you could swap the leads over to check them, my mate had similar problems when one of his leads went.

even though its down on power is it still pulling clean to the 7k revs mark or is it limiting you to lower revs?

Its been serviced recently. It doesnt rev smoothly to 7k snd its very lumpy on idle. You can feel the car vibrate on idle sorta thing and the exhaust pops a little

they are very lumpy on idle and the exhaust splutters on idle especially when cold but they always do it even when warm. however you shouldnt really feel the car vibrate a great deal at all unless you have uprated engine mounts assuming the engines running ok so my guess would be as above check leads, coil pack, spark plugs. sounds like one cylinder isnt firing/isnt firing properly!
