172mk2 vs 182

guys guys guys i am in a dilemma basicaaly iam looking to by a 172 wid esp and cruise control a late 53 or early 04 plate i only want the iceberg silver colur?basically i ve been watchin the 182 prices drop is it worth be paying a xtra 500 or 1000 for a 182 but i dnt fancy the silver in the 182 i would go for the black is it worth paying dat extra money for 10bhp coz i will get a coilover kit for the clio with 18 inch rims.so handling wont be a issue.on the evo magazine they quto the performance of the 182 at 6.6 and the 172 at 7.1 to 60 i dnt belive dat at all i think they are over xajarating so guys wat should i do :dapprove:

I was about to say only if the 182 has the Cup packs, but if your planning on getting coilovers and stupidly big wheels, I'd just save a few quid and get a 172 and use the spare cash on your mods.

No point in going on 182's 16's are fine any more and its just for looks performace will suffer.
10hp doesn't make a huge difference the new hubs on cup spec cars are better but thats not a huge deal.
172's have a bit more bottom end it seems or maybe its just the way the ones I've been in have been bedded in.
Stock handling isn't bad realy for a production hot hatch its fun.
I'd see whats availiable though a 172 with 182 hubs and leda coilovers would be my prefered route.

Chears Mate Thanks I Think The 182 Looks More Agressive But The 172 Looks More Classy

:DExcept when it gets dirty, looks like a piece of s**t.:clown: Just got mine cleaned, soooo shiny.

Somedays i think, why didnt i spend a bit more and get a 182? I dont regret it though, its quick and got all the toys the 182 has too.

I would much prefer the 182 (which i bought) because of the Cup options (which i have), the twin pipes, the better manifold, better wider wheels, and the extra 10 bhp, not to mention less miles on the clock, newer, etc...so i think the £1000 or so that you are talking about is justifiable (if there is such a word? Lol).

In terms of performance, nothing in it...apparently the 182's peak torque is lower down the rev range, and the 182 has 10 more horses, but other than that, they are the only differences i know about.

Hope this helps.

how is the 182 more aggressive...Coz it has 2 silly pipes sticking out the back!

Nout in it between the 172-182. 7bhp or something...Nothing noticeable.

Why wouldn't you have a silver 182? Its titanium silver which replaced iceburg silver from the 172's (which I think my mk1 v6 had too) - anyway, the new colour is so much nicer, really shines unlike most other silver cars that look a bit yellow / grey.

putting 18's will ruin handling! stick to 16's on decent coilovers.

Don't need coils...just decent suspension. 16's are a good balance, providing u have both decent tyres and 205's.

Buy the 172, get decent suspension, itg filter, get prospeed to knock you up an exhaust system. Stick with 16's with a 205 tyre, get a brake kit (discs, Pads, hoses) from someone like Senor Yoz and you'll be laughing with get that performs very well.

I HAVE A 172 ESP no cruise control , but reason i went for it over a 182 is , i dont like the idea of no spare wheel, to add a 182 zorst system it cost too much , also no decent coilovers were available at good prices, also my 172 dash inserts look better then 182s

na i really prefer the iceberg silver coz when the light hits it in difeernt angles the colur just blends and changes in my (opinion) it looks so much better :rasp:

not much in it at all really, if you can afford the 182 id go for that, but i prefer the looks, i like the alloys better and the exhaust but obviously thats a personal opinion. I know some of the magazines times suggest the 182 is a bit quicker (Auocar claim 182 quicker to 60 by 0.8 and quicker to 100 by 0.9) but i would put that down to the cars on the day

if you want bragging rights then go for the 172 cup becuase on paper (bhp per tonne figures) it is the highest

In reality theres not much betwen them

Dreamer!! Titanium is plain bog standard silver.... According to my mate it's very similar in make up to the paint on a silver Honda Yaris!!

I've parked my Iceburg Silver 172 next to a Titanium 182 at my local stealers and even the salesman commented on how it's a nicer colour!!

Anyway, back on topic.... Like I said above the 182 with Cup packs is worth the extra £1000 or so - But not if you intend to change the Suspension and the wheels as these, imho, are the two areas that were improved on most from the 172.

The difference in straight line performance is in the 182's favour (on paper at least) - But if your planning on putting 18's on it your obviously not bothered about that either!!

I would think a 182 with 18s is gonna be slower than a std 172! I would go with the 182 with cup packs and leave it standard personally. Although I would think there would be more difference in price between a 172 and a 182 than £1000, you can get 03 ones for around 6.5k.

I have a silver mk 2 172 like Lagerlout - Personally I was a bit gutted when the 182 came out as I like the twin exhaust (would still take it to prospeeed for a decent one though) also thhe cup packs are a nice extra - have bought both front and rear spoilers off cup so spent approx £300 on them, exhaust cost £300 plus air filter another £200 so thats £800 on just those few mods when if you bought a 182 with cup packs you would have nearly the same looking car but would not have to pay any extra for insurance!
I too prefer the iceberg silver and would have gone for a black 182 but if you have a look at Mike The Man2k's car you will see it does look wicked in Titanium.
dont worry abouty what everone says about handling or straight line speed - I have coilovers on mine and 17's and it still goes like a train and handles better than most cars ive driven (my old 205 1.9 gti would have been close!). When I changed from 16's to 17's the ride was a little harsher but I did not notice any difference in acceleration etc - at the end of the day the larger the wheel the lower profile the tyre so there is only a very minimal difference in speed - also with a larger wheel top end speed would be higher than smaller wheels.

Is that a new one to the range? ;)

The difference in performance is minimal and can easily be outweighed with a good driver.
I have a full fat 172, pick up my decat tonight I have a itg filter and will be getting the inlet matched to give it a little more edge, these mods will cost me less than £150 and should free up a few more ponies. I have raced 182 cups and beaten them and in turn have been beaten by another full fat 172, these cars can go really fast with someone who knows what they are doing.

save a few £'s and Get a 172 turn the esp off and get it on a track, it will keep you smiling for a while!

how are you getting all those mods for £150 - can you get my inlet done cheap??

I bought the Decat from someone on CS for £70 and the Itg is about £40
The only reason im getting the inlet done so cheap is because the matey who is doing it is currently doing £1200's worth of work on another cylinder head/ manifoild for me. So he said he would do it as a favour to a good customer. He would usually charge around £150-200 depending on what you wanted, he is not Renault specific and if you were spending the money then you might aswell get one of the lads off here to do it as they work on these day in day out.

thanks guys oh for your input iam driven both and it seems the same performance wise does 18s mess up the car coz it slows the performance a bit but my mates 1 flew like a eagle we even beet a 330ci on the stright with 18s on so i dnt think they slow the car heaps but it does slow it down.the 18s look amazing once lowered

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
I have beaten 330's to 100 but then they change to 4th and start to dissappear. 18's will look PIMP but IMO they will ruin the ride. Stick with the std rims, Personally i think they suit the car well

my mate put 182 on and lower the car with just 40ml drop the ride was alful it rubbed on the back bumper aswell but i want to do it propplerly with good coilovers and rolled arches and the cam properly allighned as any 1 else got 18s on the sport.

He wasnt racing you. Ive seen a 330 nail it, even the 330cd is an awesome piece of kit. A 182 with 18's would have been a train stop behind if he was.

cup spoilers increase the drag (drag coefficient was 0.36 for cup vs 0.35 for std according to Renault literature). Bet the difference in top end is half of feck all though
