197 ff or meggy 225 trophy

Im looking at chopping in my swift for either 225 trophy or a normal 197.
both can be had for about 8k now on a 55/06 plate so bargains ahoy!
Dont know what i like best tho. Ive driven both cars round brands but never on the road.
I prefered the clio on track as i found the meggy dull but i think 225 will be a better every day road car.
Anyone know how they stack up on running costs? low 30 mpg for both cars with similar insurance costs?
How about servicing??

imo id go with the 225 id say the running cost would be similar. i personally cant see the servicing being much different either. but first id test drive them both

If its never going to get used on track, i'd go Trophy.

I've driven both on track and the 197 is much more fun.

225 is better everyday though. Turbo kick is wicked.

Having had a 197, we now have a 225 and a 182 Trophy.

I'd say the Meggy over the 197 mate. its a little more plush, much more power and more room. All down to what you want though mate.

Id go for the 225. costs about the same as a 197 to run as well i reckon
The trophet and the R26 differances are the Limited slip diff thats about the major things

197. Begs to be revved, less gruff than the 172 ;). The build is also in a different league than the MK2. Also they have loooads of presence on the road. On here most peeps only look at the photo's, and tbh thay are hard to capture. See one in the flesh and they are awesome. Pretty exclusive too!!!

hmmm tough call. having owned a 197, i think i would opt for the trophy. not much in it. my main grudge with my 197 was the lack of low down umph. that aside i really liked it to be honest. interiors really nice.

trophy obvisouly has that low down urge covered, the only thing your left with is which you prefer the looks of. I think i prefer the 197, tho the meganes grown on me loads over the years!

Think megane tho for me. If only just.

As Ian said you can get a 'soft' 225, or the Trophy Meggy for around that, not a R26 :)

Not bothered with the r26 tbh.. too much cash. As far as i know the trophy was the first chuckable 225 Dont fancy the normal 225 tbh.
It will see a bit of track action but also used for 50 miles a day 4 commuting.

Hmm hard choice imo i'd go 197 because the 225 doesn't appeal unless its R26.

Although the best way to decide is always a test drive.

The only thing I would say about the early 197s that goes against them is the steering and suspension set up, especially the steering being a little vague, with not much feedback. Cup packed 197s are much nicer to drive - although finding one for 8 grand may be difficult.

Utter tosh!!!!

There have been no tweeks to the steering. Only changes are stiffer/lower springs, revised dampers, and ARB settings. I've actually read a few write ups where they seem to think the non cupped Chassis is more adjustable.

It depends if you like silver cars or not mate. I'm pretty sure all meg trophys are silver. Personally I like them :)

Meggy because the 197 is (imo) too slow. Having to rev the nuts off it to get the go has nothing on boost. I'd say my 225 is more fun and far more acomplished than my 172 was.

all subjective of course but a 197 looks far far far better than any meggy.

I parked my car up the other day and saw an Albi Blue 197 drive past and thought "wow". Then I smiled, because I thought I own one of those!

I have never seen one close up driving past really and they look the boll0x.

Thats the fun of it. It loves to be spanked.

Id fall asleep at the wheel of a Renault "drive everywhere in 6th" Megane.

Also when you want to by lazy and let it settle down and just drive places in quietness then it will do just that.
