2 better than none? (Winter tyre related)

Let's not turn this in to the normal winter tyre nonsense.

The TT has some budget front tyres on at the moment from the previous owner. After changing the rears to Avons I was looking to change the fronts at the end of the month. Now would I be better offer getting two winter tyres for the front? Im guessing 2 will be better than none? Especially as its the fronts..

Any recommendations for a 235/40/18?

Imo on FauxWD you want for of the same, personally i'd fit another 2 Avons like the rear. You really don't "need" winter tyres on the TT, my V6 was superb in the snow.

To answer the question I wouldn't fit 2 winter tyres to a FauxWD car.

Tbh if your not doing loads of miles I wouldn't bother with winter tyres the weather here isn't bad enough. I live on a farm down a track and both clio s have had no problems on summer tyres.

CJ had normal tyres on his 225 and he was in deep snow carpark for lols and had zero issues. The Quattro is very good made. Trust it.

To be honest it rarely gets bad "down" here..

I'll just get some matching summer tyres. Thanks for your input gents.

Bearing in mind they're the ones that drive me primarily and steer then yeah I'm guessing its not a bad thing.

Anyway, my questions have been answered..

Problem with 4wd or fauxWD is that you can accelerate almost as normal .. but when it comes to braking - if it's slippery - it's game over.

I wish I could take everyone for a lap of my local bypass and roundabouts in the snow just to show the difference.

I was WOT in 2nd/3rd out of roundabouts on snow/ice .. braking from 60+ on same conditions .. same car on different tyres at same speed would have got to that speed, but been upside-down over the roundabout and in a ditch .. 100%.

It's like driving in the rain .. just no comparison.

this country has gone mad for winter tyres but don't think we really need them! just drive careful

also I would get rid of the Avons I had them on my Clio and its the most awful tyre I have ever used ! I rate budgets better TBH

Really? What Avons did you use? Ive found the ZZ5's great tbh. They also get great reviews. The ZZ3's on the other hand..

faux wheel drive can be made permanent with one click of the handbrake if it gets that bad..;)

zz3's I believe, I nearly understeered myself into on coming traffic when the tread got below 5mm and I wasn't even driving fast!

maybe the zz5 is better but wont ever use Avon again ! From my experience anyway

Theres no convincing some people until they've tried them.

I can understand why because until last year I had never used and always got everywhere I wanted in snow even if it was a struggle. But then when you make the switch to proper winter tyres you realise how easy it is to drive literally anywhere. The only thing you have to worry about with winters fitted is other retarded road users lol.

I agree totally with the last bit and its like everything you could be the safest driver on the road, with the safest tyres, car etc. but there is too many plebs on the roads...... esp during winter

Winter tyres have more grip than summer tyres when temperature is cold (different compound)
Winter tyres have more grip than summer tyres when there is snow (different tread pattern)

If you are concerned about not having enough grip in the winter (which is certianly a possibility in terms of stopping travel totally in some places) then buy winter tyres.

For a Rwd car, buy all 4
For a 4wd car, buy all 4
For a fwd car, just but the front two


For a Fauxwd car, Id go with just the front two as well TBH, the rears are only needed for drive when the fronts slip anyway.

I miss my 106 totally underrated car, gave the pick up and landy a run for its money even in a muddy field.

With no LSD and hardly any ground clearance?

Your pickup and landy must be crap in some way if a 106 came close TBH! maybe someone nicked your tyres and left just the wheels and you havent noticed?

Having been off road around most of Dartmoor in a Saxo I could well believe it tbh.

On the road and in a field the 106 was brilliant, agile and quick which is what you need rounding up the animals its mostly flat so ground clearance wasn't an issue and the tyres didn't tear up the grass. Don't get me wrong I wouldn't take it down anything demanding or stick a cattle trailer on. The pick-up and land rover are great in the sticky bits but on a road with abit of snow the land rovers freezing, slow and the window mists up and the pickups so tail happy when you go near the throttle.

So yeah on flat roads which I imagine what most on here drive then I would be just as happy in a 106 as the land rover. + at least it wouldn't get stolen XD

Completely agree with this. We have had some really heavy snow in Leeds and Bradford over the last few years and the difference between normal tyres and winter tyres is unbelievable. I couldn't get off my street in normal ones. In my winter tyres I have been up hills and flying past 4x4's. At the end of the day people will do what they want to do, but the facts are all there. Winter tyres are designed for cold weather and perform much better in those conditions. Of course you can struggle by on normal tyres - but if you have the choice, why not use the specialised product.

With summer tyres I stuggle to get off my drive in icy snowy conditions, with winters on not had any issues.

You can also drive out of the way of others who have lost control.
