Neither of them were amazingly successful so I guess that effects the price, that and the fact there is no realistic way of using them much, you are very limited with what sort of races you can enter them in, and trying to keep the engines running etc will be massively expensive, its not like parts are readily available like for a DFV car.
I would tend to believe that yes, as Rumour had it the megatron's were making well upwards of 1500bhp in qualifying trim, although I doubt anyone actually knows the real power figure, I spoke to someone who's colleague had worked on them and he said for qualifying they used to literally just blank off the wastegate to allow them to make as much boost as possible.
Insanity like that is why they should never have taken them out of f1
I wasn't even old enough too see them do this FFS :S
With modern technology the numbers would be ridiculous now, they would have to be something like 750cc engines if they were going to be unrestricted these days, as they would still make 1000bhp with that size if they were allowed the amount of toluene in the fuel they did back then as well.
