Air conditioning

  Meg on pistonheads £6995

I doubt it!

I test drove a non-air car and bought one with air - no difference in performance, but tiny effect on economy IF IF I use it - about 10 days in August 03.

but I dont see how taking the belt off would help - if its not on, it cant drain any power!?

If the aircon isnt on it isnt sapping any power.. if it is on it isnt even noticable in my 172

  172 cup,s2 rs turbo

the aircon will use engine power but not to an extent that you would notice it.the thing you would really notice would be a slight decrease in fuel consumption with the air con on.when the aircon is off the compressor isnt driven so basically the belt just drives an additional pulley.also the aircon is cut under full throttle so the you have all the engine power for accleration.disconnecting the compressor wont gain you anything because when you want all the power(@full throttle) the ecu disengages the aircon compressor anyway so it doesnt cause a drain.also most cars now use a single aux belt so the aircon pump hasnt its own individual belt that you could take off.the 172 and the cup both produce the same engine power even though one has aircon and one doesnt.the only benefit of not having the aircon is the weight saving.
