Can everyone that owns a 172 phase one tell me of any common faults they have experienced with there clios so i can watch out for it and also if my car may still have it, the current mileage is 44565 so not to high!

Also when i should get the cambelt done i dont think its been done yet!

Regards!!!

you should of had the belt done ages ago!

5 Years OR 72k

Get it done if in doubt

You see i would have done but seeing as i have owned the car since Thursday theres not much i can do about it.

This is a testimony as to why women should not own cars.

  Chocolate Bar™
get your belt done! other than that I've had no problems with mine bar a small electrical fault with the alarm and the radiator going

  Scirocco GT 210
At that milage check to see if it's recently had a new (or has a stainless steel) exhaust on it.

The standard one drops off at about 40k miles.

Cambelt is not a fault...

Things like the following are:

Loose wire connections under both front seats causing SERV Airbag light to illuminate.
Seat runner bolt falls out causing seat not to come forward to allow rear access
Standard exhaust falls off (all models inc 182)
Steering wheel wears around outside edge but does not melt and deform like later ones.
Gear surround prone to breakage
Silver door grabs wear quickly

stuff like that.

  Lots of Alfas
Get the cambelt, aux belt and tensioners done asap as if it hasnt been done your car will be a ticking time bomb. Ive had mine for 2 years now and love it as much when I first got it. The exhaust fell off and I had to replace the steering rack mounts but other than that its been a solid little car. Expect things at that age to start wearing out such as rear brake discs/bearings etc.

Engine mounts causing downpipe to knock
MAP sensor made fail MOT

Mines a W reg 58k
Cambelt done 18 month ago.
All the wheels bearings
Front brake discs
Exhaust mid section and back box.
I have my front window motor go too.

  182, SQ7, Trafic
I've got idling problems but only within a 100rpm range so not to worrying
Lower rear gearbox mount (the dogbone one) are weak
Backboxes are crap!

Thanks alot guys, really helpfull stuff there.

I have a folio full of receipts dating since 2003/4 also it got a new exhaust little over 2 years ago so not bad there.

My only concern is the suspension, before i bought it the guy put it through an MOT and it failed for a Coil spring, which subsequently was changed (front nearside only) I personally would have had them both changed to even out wear and tear?

Also the suspension seems to make a creaking sound when going over speed bumps??? Anyone else???

As said, some things that tend to go are:

Exhaust
Window regulators
Steering wheel goes manky
As do the interior silver grab handle things
Engine mounts can wear quite quickly

What do you mean window regulators? Does it cause them to rattle slightly because if this is the fault im thinking of then jesus christ every clio ive driven suffers this!?!?

  53 Clio's & counting
well i find with mine that i get a knocking noise under acceleration, quite a large knocking/thudding,iv replaced all the engine mounts and adjusted them as per instructions on here but the engine still feels as if its moving about alot, can anyone suggest anything?
this noise can also be caused by aged top mounts but i have replaced this on mine

Adjustment is the key.

Pull drivers side one towards you by undoing bolts
Same on one under battery
Gear box one same again. All will take two people or a bar

Do all these with dogbone undone. No bolts.

The the front bolt out. Black bit that it connects too loosen top bolt and and middle move forward, retighten. Loosen back bolt and push dogbone up and retighten.

Then get ur mate to rock engine as you pull dogbone down and try to line bolt back up and tighten.

If that don't work it's new mounts. Hillpower does an uprated dogbone for about 57 quid. All this does trick but old mounts will rip like this cause it really puts them all under a lot of tension.
