The Nissan LEAF
The Nissan LEAF has won the prestigious European Car of the Year title. The world’s first mass-produced family electric car beat other nominees including the Alfa Romeo Giulietta and Vauxhall Meriva to the top spot.
It is a really significant win for the all-electric Nissan LEAF. Mainstream acceptance is seen as vital for the groundbreaking Nissan, and the judges’ seal of approval is a big step towards this.
It’s even better news for the UK: the Nissan LEAF will be built at the firm’s Sunderland plant from 2013.
It actually goes on sale here well before that. UK cars arrive in dealers from March 2011, complete with 90mph top speed and 100-mile electric range.
The Nissan LEAF will be priced from £23,990, including the £5,000 Government EV grant. Reservations can be placed now, with Nissan asking for just £257 to join the queue.
Nissan was the first Japanese maker to win the Car of the Year title, with the Nissan Micra back in 1993. Now, the firm is celebrating once again with the forward-looking LEAF.
