Another £500 Bargain PB Clio 172

  Many.
Searching ebay randomly Thursday night, Happend across this and clicked buy it now within 10mins of finding it :D

Picked it up yesterday, Needs a few bits (which I already knew!), Dephaser rattle, leaky rad, covered in dents from hailstones and finally the brakes are shocking where its been sat for two months with no MOT. Also needs a bloody good clean inside and out, but for £500, I love it.

Get it to mine later (curently at my brothers).

Plan is to fix it up, and most likely sell it on, Might have a buyer for it already too!

This will be the third Clio on my drive atm, and the second 172.

Hopefully more later!

£500 is a bargain, but once you've done all the bits mentioned inc the belts (guessing a specialist rate) is there actually much money to be made as profit? They're going for next to nothing these days

Remembered afterwards! Will ask somebody nicely to change it!

I have all the proper tools to do the belts the same as a specialist would. This will be the third RS I've done, and the sixth renault using the tools.

Re: Another £500 Bargain BG Clio 172

Can't go wrong for £500!

If you know how to do the belts, could be a nice little money spinner.

Buy cheap - fix yourself - tidy up - sell for a few £100 profit

Repeat.

Thats fair enough then, there's a bit of profit in it then if your doing them, when you said belts I just assumed it would be got somewhere to have them done.

Pretty much the plan, Similar as I done to the Iceberg 172 I did recently (theres a thread about that too!).

Yeah thats fair enough, I never pay for something like that to be done on my car, I have all the proper tools so just as good.

Today was a bit oif a clio day...

Interior is in need of a bloody good clean, steering wheel has its usual melting and broken thumb grip, but its not bad really.

How I got it today.
null_zps603fba6b.jpg

IMO, A belt that clearly needs to be changed
null_zps68f1e384.jpg

The terrible rattle, and the play in that belt! Excuse Paris's stupid language.

So plans now, belts, dephaser, service, MOT!

More soon!

Another day, Loads more progress.

Cambelt kit arrived (Gates belt) so stripped the car tonight to get it fitted.

Removed the top belt cover and was greated by this...
null_zps8dab7d97.jpg

For those that don't know, that is one of two cambelt idlers, the plastic you can see has broken off. Bloody extreamly lucky it hasnt done the belt, and most likey where some of the noise is coming from, and the reason for the belt being so slack! It was a genuine Renault belt and there wasn't any real signs of it being apart before, so its either managed 95k on the same belt, or it was changed a few years ago, however the belt was in quite bad shape. As per the Silver 172 I did before, this highlights why its important to do it at the right interval!

Got the rest off...

New belt and dephaser

Fitted using proper cam tools (and proper cam pulley locking tools used to tighten pulleys!)

Then, the moment of truth (Cap left off dephaser as I wanted to check it all afterwards)

Tomorrow I'll refit a lot of it, leaving the Aux belt until the new one from Adam at Wolvo turns up, then I'll sort everything else!

interesting pics cheers :)

I'd take loads more if I actually remembered!

Liking the drive way. You was lucky with that idler mate!

Bloody lucky, the first thing I did when I picked the car up was start it and rev it quite hard, plus moving it around my drive etc, Could have snapped at any time, although I imagine if it was going to go, it would have gone on the previous owner who only really stopped using the car due to the noise!

Nice way to get oil onto your new belt. I would have also changed the oil before starting it with the new dephaser pulley.

  Many.
I actually loled at that. I cleaned up the oil, and none of it went onto at all. That is new oil, what came through is clearly what was just sat in the oilways etc. I'm not a f**king idiot.

where an earth are you finding all the cheap and relatively good ones?

ive searched ebay for days looking for one to buy and spruce back up

Never seen a pulley like that before!

I've seen it before, normally on cars with snapped cambelts though!

Just a case of being on the ball, checking ebay, forums etc, Its worked well for me so far

f**k me, that tensioner won't last long like that!

I'm still surprised it lasted this long!

There is no such thing as a bargain Clio Sport.......by the time you add up what you spend you might as well of bought one needing no work, it will be worth 1500 all day long once done and thats assuming it looks the part bodywork wise, but thats about it......even if you do it on a serious budget

500 purchase,
100 belt kit,
dephaser 100,
brakes all round 100 (cheap oem),
plugs +oil+ service parts 50,
no doubt will need engine / GB mounts 100
MOT : £30 +(optional tax)

Thats a very optimistic price list, by the time you add that up you and then work out your hourly rate for the arse ache of fitting all this stuff yourself, you'll probably find you would have been better working in Kwit Save for the time.

  Many.
£500 purchase
£84 belt kit
£90 ddephaser
£34 service
£free brakes
£35 mot

no need for engine mounts, it's no worse than any other clio RS

then..
-£200 gaz coilovers (standard nearly new in the boot)
-£150 Ktec Stealth exhaust (same as above)

And even with your list, assuming you're right about it being worth 1500, I'd be making £500 profit?!

Its not profit exactly is it, balance out the time and there are much easier ways to make £500. If you enjoy it , fair play, but i stand by my comment, there is no bargain in buying a rough 172 and fixing it up, you paid what it was worth in the end.

If i wasn't working on this one I'd be working on another, I love playing with cars. I don't value my time that highly as there's nothing else I'd rather do.

Nice work! Nice to see more people doing it themselves, you're fairly local, handy with spanners and we've never met.

How weird.

Taken it for a 100 yard test drive, seems good, freed off the rear brakes from being sat, Few more bits to do, but plan to book MOT ASAP.
