Another Eibach Spring Question - Not Found The Answer Yet

  172 Flamer
Sorry if this has been answered before although I have just spent an hour using the search without much luck.

Looking at using my Ph2 Clio 172 which is totally standard for a bunch of trackdays. Not going to turn it into a hardcore trackday hack as budget is very tights and to be honest, the standard car is pretty great out of the box but will update the brakes, pads, filter and suspension.

So, for possibly some road use and around 6 - 8 trackdays a year, which Eibach springs would be more suitable, Pro's or Sports? I want the better handling springs rather than looks although a little lower would be good. From what I have read, the general feeling is Pro's give a better handling car but don't lower over standard springs much and the Sports lower a lot more but don't handle as good as Pro's.

Is this the case, any thoughts? Which would be better for more trackdays and handling?

Ahem,
Seems like you're using yours like mine.
Sportlines and Whiteline ARB = End of thread.

Use mine daily for work, I have 3 passengers and go over about 4 speed bumps at work no problem.
Handling on road is superb. First trackday with mods next month but confident.

I've got Prolines on mine and to say they were an improvement over standard is a massive understatement,
they're also surprisingly comfortable on normal roads with potholes and uneven surfaces.

Although i've read a few threads where people have said there's zero difference between the two other than ride height,
put it this way i've never heard of anyone saying their sportlines were in any way different performance wise from prolines.

If your springs are ok then I'd say leave them. Will make very little difference to the car, if yours are old and worn, Eibachs make sense because they're half the price of Renault springs. A spring is a spring at the end of the day.

Had this on my Cup for a while and it was without a doubt a great set up.

Sportlines is my choice ride and handling is great one of the best mods you can do IMO

Agree with this 100%.

I got my 172 Cup from brand new to over 100k on standard springs including plenty of trackdays.

Then a fractured spring meant either getting raped by Renault for a standard set, or fitting some Eibachs.

I went for Sportlines (as the amount of weight removed meant the car always rode higher than standard so could do with the extra drop) and can honestly say that on both road and track over the last 20k miles of my ownership, there was no discernible difference at all. Except to my wallet.

Really, no difference in handling between standard Renault springs and Eibach Sportlines? Does the cup have the same standard Renault springs as a Ph2 172?

No.

Wouldnt be surprised if cup springs were eibachs of some desciption tbh.

Ok, that makes sense, thanks.

So it seems upgrading the stock 172 springs to some Eibach's is still going to be a benifit but its not totally clear if either the Sports or Pro are more suited to track or if in fact there would be any difference between then at all.

I've had prolines on a few hondas now and they have been great, I have never tried the sportline as the general consensus amongst the honda forums is that the sportlines are softer and only to be used with aftermarket shocks. That said, on this forum everyone raves about the sportline with oem shocks so perhaps they differ from car to car..

There is a big thread somewhere about the differences between the two springs.

Iirc the gist of it was the sport for show pro for go wasn't true and that the Sportline was the better spring overall

Won't make a difference in reality. Most people say Eibachs make a massive difference but that's probably just because they're replacing worn or cracked springs.

I've got Eibach Pros on my car, and honestly I think it rides just like a standard car, it made a massive difference at the time, but I also changed all the wishbones, track rod ends, top mounts and dampers at the same time, so of course it would feel like a new car after that lot.

OEM springs on my car were replaced just before I got mine so mine were new, when I changed them over for Sportlines the difference was still huge!

Tbh for the ultimate setup I'd go for Koni dampers, Sportlines & Whiteline ARB (assuming you're not going coilovers) - that's what I'd do!

Well by fitting lowering springs on the car you're pre-loading the dampers which essentially reduces the total movement available to them without adjusting the stiffness of them to suit. This won't do great things for the ride but then a Clio has a pretty average ride quality at best anyway.

You say 'ultimate' setup. Ultimate at what exactly? I'd put money on it not being any quicker round a track.

For me, as budget is tight, I could not afford the perfect setup. I am just looking at something to just improve the handling over the OEM springs and read a lot on here about the Eibach Pro springs being an improvement. If I do go for anything, then it would probably be Pro although I will probably change my mind tomorrow :)

Interested in this. About to order some pro springs and cup dampers for my Ph1 as an interim measure to do some trackdays before I strip it and get some sorted coilovers on.

Question is, I was going to go with cup shocks (one is leaking so replacing them both/all) as I can get new ones for £35/corner, but after seeing the Koni comment above would that be better? How much are Koni shocks?

Cheers

I can't comment on that as i've never had either cup or Koni shocks. ;)

Although I might upgrade to Koni's in the future as they're not really that expensive.

Yeah, I was just going to go with default cup shocks and eibach pros.... hmmm, bit of thinking, though I've sort of promised a friend who can get the cup shocks at this cheap price I'd have 'em, and as they're a short term solution if I don't think it's the greatest set up it won't be forever

tbh i fitted sportlines to my cup and i dont care what other people say but my honest opinion is theyre over rated.. made my cup more uncomfortable and infact thinking of removing them.. just stick the standard springs and maybe change roll bar bush's etc

If you can get cheap cup shocks from a mate i'd go with that for the time being,
as long as they're in good condition you're good.

The Ph1 seems a bit too wallowy (is that a word?) for my liking coming from a 200 cupped. Would prefer something a bit more firmer, hoping this'll do the trick
