I believe it is usually attached to the standard airbox in someway.....as mine probably was too until the corner of the car was caved in meaning everything was smashed in that corner (no it wasnt me I bought it like that!!).

It appears to be an electronic valve of somesort.....something to do with the induction flap/restrictor maybe??

Thats part of the acoustic valve assembly. Basically a restrictive part of the induction system.
Alot of people do away with them...me being one of them.

Yep located in the passenger wheel arch by the horn. Unplug the multiplug, plug the vaccum hose and it'll be fine. I removed mine on both 172 and 182.

It actually smoothed mine out when i got rid of it. It makes things rather jerky during gearshifts i found.

Something else I dont need to worry about then - I'm going to be fitting a stupidly large induction filter anyway before its on the road!!!
