Anyone tried chipping there Clio V6

Hi.. has anyone tried chipping there Clio V6 ? or added an induction kit or sports zorst?

No big engine mods... but, I am about to have my Clio V6 (2002) Superchipped (next month)...as its pretty much well run in now (6000 miles) and get a Pipercross Evo Viper induction kit fitted at around about the same time to see how it goes. Dont fancy adding too many crazy mods like NOS as this can only end in tears after melt down occurs : / (although I have been told the V6 can haddle loads of NOS reliably..I will pass on that option for now!) .... also...need some basic mods to keep my Ren Warranty valid! (stuff I can just change back to standard for servicing etc!)

http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=1087Viper Induction Kit

After reading a back issue of EVO mag that reported the Superchip gave a 13bhp increase, which isnt bad from a non-turbod car. And the Viper kit is also expected to produce approx 10bhp. (so 23bhp in total) Taking it up to over 250bhp... (then later on will look at changing the exhaust... that I have been informed will gain further bhp increase and more of a growl...but not sure of the figures? From Mark Fish Racing in Harlow, Essex)

I dont use anything but Shell Optimax...as this makes the car quite a bit more responsive with the extra Octane level, unlike Super Unleaded! Been trying out the NF (Nitrous Formula) Octane Booster when filling up...only added half the recommended fill up... and it felt ok.. so will try a bottle load next time.

Anyone that wants to check out the TOP 10 octane Boosters...heres the link.. (NF Booster came joint 1st place) search yahoo..and you will find a UK distributer...or let me know if you want the link.

cut and paste this link if it doesnt load by clicking..

(although I have been told the V6 can haddle loads of NOS reliably Yep an old forum user on here ran 150 I think for ages without problem but didnt run an uprated pump so melted two pistons but with an uprated pump you should be fine.

After reading a back issue of EVO mag that reported the Superchip gave a 13bhp increase, which isnt bad from a non-turbod car. And the Viper kit is also expected to produce approx 10bhp. (so 23bhp in total) I dont think youll get 23hp from them 15~20 at best. And a full proper external ecu remap would be better than an superchip one whch cannot be resetup for extra mods.

Your warently for the engine is invalid with ECU work and they can tell that an ecu has been remaped at Renault.

But they have to under law prove that the mod was the reason for the failure. But most garages wont even bother checking for miner mods under warently work.

Be good to hear from anyone that has already started tuning there V6? Let me know how u got on and what power increased? or anyone thats interested?

Best mods IMO would be a head work along with new plebham (or wheatever its called) have a look in some other threads for today BenR has been talkign about v6 mods.

You can supercharge the v6 and a forum user on here has one 400hp I think at 1bar not sure how mcuh but it was custom work.

Other mods are individual throttle bodies which would cost you about 5~6k I guess which would give you about 315hp (this has been proven before).

If you want to keep the stock look have a look at getting the casm done Im sure for ~700 you could be looking at another 15~20hp although you need a remap to take full advantage of it.

get the superchip fitted at a Renault dealer that does it then and you wont hve a problem with warranty relating to the chip then!!

Hi.... thanks for your replies.. edde and specialk.. I asked Superchips (Buckingham) if it would mess up the warranty if I had it chipped.. and I think they have some agreement with Renault now as they are so well established. But they have never had any problems with anyone having there Renault warranty discontinued, and said that he can assure me that Renault cant detect that the management has been chipped, unlike the old way of chipping.. by plugging in a chip, it is now downloaded by modem. Saying that... Ill give Renault an (anonymous) call to see what they have to say...

ALSO... I agree that an external chip being better in the long run for serious mods.. with future modifying needing an upgradeable chip.. but I am quite sure I will be happy to get approx. 30 bhp more (260bhp) with a custom exhaust/superchip/Air Induction kit. All pretty safe options... and I hope to upgrade to the latest MK2 V6 around August. (one last thing with mods that we all forget... INSURANCE! This thing is already a group 20. I think my insurance company would fall off there chair laughing if I told them I had my car fitted with a Supercharger!! ) All the mods I am going to do are easy to swap back over or not detectable if I need to make a claim. (a case of What Modifying??)

Im trying to find the guy that had his supercharged.. if anyone can find the link, can you let me know please? Thanks.

Take it easy everyone! Anyone that has more V6 tuning experience ideas.. be good to hear from u.

p.s Pinhead... Yes Shell Optimax is higher Octane than Super Unleaded..(developed by F1 guys) it may seem like a waste of time to some, but I can assure you my car has lost a second 0-60 using Optimax.. using Super feels like your being held back by a rope in comparison!! (plus adding a bottle of Octane boost will feel even better if you buy a decent one...dont use stp (Junk) booster tho! )

Hi,

I used to have the Superchip in my V6 but have no before and after figures to give you. I can say there was a defintite improvement in throttle response which was even more evident when I had the chip removed recently (due to adding nitrous). I have the Pipercross EVO IK and a custom exhaust too but dont think you will see anything like the gains you are expecting. I think your improvement in 0-60 times is more down to the engine loosening up than the Optimax as it is still relatively low mileage. I have an AP22 and agree with your figures as I consistently get 5.5 - 5.7 and have a best at 5.3 when launching it from 3-4000k. These devices are only as good as you set them up but mine has been configured and verified against GPS too so is pretty accurate I feel.

The guy with the Supercharged V6 is Mike T and Im sure he will comment as soon as he sees this thread. His modifications and knowledge are considerable and his experience is worth listening too.

I am soon to be adding the Mk2 plenum setup to mine along with a Motec M800 ecu so that I can take the Nitrous to higher levels with a greater degree of safety. I currently keep it to an extra 50bhp which provides an addtional 115 lbs/ft of torque!! (total 330) I have seen a few stats on V6s on the rolling road and they usually make about 215-220bhp as standard, mine was in this region with IK and exhaust but standard ecu when tested recently. The Motec will allow the car to be setup much better, getting the best from the mods and I will also be adding a decat. Nitrous will then be staged up along with ignition r****d as necessary.

I also have new shocks, wheels, spoiler, splitter with seats and harnesses on the way. Hope you get some stats on yours for comparison as you start modifying.

I have driven, and nearly destroyed, Mike Ts supercharged V6 and it is an awesome car, something to aspire to.

Tim

Hi Tim.. thanks for your reply, great to hear from someone thats already started modifying...... I found it very interesting reading!...

I will go ahead with the Superchip next month (gotta start somewhere) sounds like it was worth while adding, as you felt a change once it was removed...and it was making a definite improvement in throttle response. (Thanks for confirming this)...I have found some figures on the Superchip website..and they have a powergraph to show the improved figure. You are right about the standard V6 putting out slightly lower bhp than 230 on the rolling road! (But, I feel this is a little low.. maybe rolling roads are not as efficient as an open road?) Here is the link.. (it does agree that there is a 13bhp increase)

Click link.. V6 http://www.superchips.co.uk/curves/cliov6.pdfSuperchips Graph

Also, I agree about the engine loosening up.. it was pretty tight up until around 5k - 6k and now drives much more freely. Can you let me know what you think of the Pipercross IK?? I would like to hear if it is worth fitting this to my V6? ...did it make any noticeable gains? and...does it sound good? (also a nice added bonus! : )

Would you mind telling me where you had your exhaust done? I am interested in this for the near future as this will have to follow after the chip and IK change.

Is there any agreement with V6 owners (along with yourself) on what after market suspension is the best to use and what set up works best for the road (front and back?) There is definite room for improvement.. but the standard handling is something you do learn with experience to get the best out of it... which doesnt take away the fun factor of this car.

Ill hold back on any further questions!! ....dont want to write a book here!

It would be good if you could leave some pics of your V6...and again once you have the new wheels and spoilers fitted, have you gone for 18s? 19s? Please keep us updated on your progress with your nos!!! Thats the ultimate add on!!... and look forward to hearing how you progress with it!! ....If you can leave some timed 0-60s before and after...this would be v.cool!

Take it easy... Ill look out for Mike Ts crazy machine!! Be good to hear from him!

Cheers..

But they have never had any problems with anyone having there Renault warranty discontinued, Yep Superchip have a good reputation the dealers can be the problem though and superchip do have a decient warently package. Dont forget Cliosport member get a discount from the main place which I would recomend you take your car to as there much better service than many of the outlets who wont check the a/f ratios as well so possibly damaging your engine

and said that he can assure me that Renault cant detect that the management has been chipped, unlike the old way of chipping.. by plugging in a chip, it is now downloaded by modem. Saying that... Ill give Renault an (anonymous) call to see what they have to say... Hum Id get thet down on paper The new software isnt the original one so Renault computers can tell if its been remaped (just like the insuracne compnay can in a few seconds). BenR had some messing round with the software and managed to wipe the superchip software from a 172 without realising it so Renault could overwrite the superchip sftware without them or you knowing.

You wont get anyhting from Renault i recon theyll play the if you modify the car then the warently on that item and all related item is invalid but garages may play this differently.

All the mods I am going to do are easy to swap back over or not detectable if I need to make a claim. (a case of What Modifying??) Id recomend you tell the insuracne compnay everything. Look at conner on here his insuracne was invalid when he moded his car and he is now left with a smashed up car and having to pay a fair bit each month for it. You may be able to remove a pannel filter etc in the enven of a minor claim bit what happens if you have a crash when you dont have to chance of removing anyhting. The superchip can and will be found by insurance companies there going to be doing this ecu check more and more as an insuracne investigator told me.

Pipercross seemed to me to improve mid-range power slightly but this may be subjective. It does give a nice roar at high revs though my car no longer has its engine cover in place so it is drowned out by the deafening engine/exhaust combination. My exhaust was custom made by Quicksilver though Ktec racing produce one at half the price now, they also do a nice KW suspension kit and can set it up. I have Leda shocks and run the back pretty stiff unless Im doing launches and the front softer. Setup is due to be revamped properly soon. My wheels are Compomotive 18" RL and the rears sit 15mm wider each side than standard which makes the car look more aggressive. Spoiler and splitter were from Rsport. Also have removed sections from front and rear bumper. Nitrous makes a big difference even at the currently modest settings. Stats available once Motec is fitted and nitrous reconfigured.

surely an air filter and exhaust then a chip would be better ??? as then the chip will be settup for the exhasut also ?

Superchip is just a flash download to ecu. It is a standard remap and doesnt take account of any specific mods, it is not user configurable. You should know too that if you need it removed, it costs, and you have to pay top dollar again to have it re-flashed.

Hi.. cheers for the replies.. edde.. I agree with all ur advice.. Ill make sure its covered, good to learn from others experiences, cheers! Where do Cliosport members get a discount tho?

TRW1... cheers for the pics! thats some mad machine u have there! I like the racing look.. looks as tuff as hell! First I have seen the open mouth front... really suits the car! Black wheels have made the car look even more aggressive...and the kit stand out further. Its not easy to improve on the standard look... best one Ive seen. Nice job!! (did you say that you have more wheels and kit on there way? or are these the ones?)

How long have you owned it? Some time has been spent on this! (and £££s)

The engine must be deafening tho when your on a mission? Is it mostly a track car ...do you use it every day? Also... do you know where I can get my car rolling roaded in the Essex area? and will it ground out on the rollers as it is so dam low? I like the idea of the timing gear you have there for 0-60s... did you buy that online?

Ill take a look at the suspension at ktec.. and zorst.

....................

Malice... Im not going to go too crazy with the engine upgrades.. just the easy stuff... as I mentioned. I wont need to have an upgradable chip.. so the order will not make much difference. Until now (finding this forum yesterday!) I havent had the chance to chat with any other V6 owners about modifying or anything else! I have owned mine 6 months... and only seen one other Clio V6 driving around since then!..and theres nowhere else online that I know caters for the Clio V6? So this is great to find this place... and meet some cool people and there insane ass motors!! : )

cheers again!!

V6ing

Had to wait 5 months for those wheels to be built, dont go to Compomotive unless the wheels are off the peg. Am waiting for seats, harnesses, Motec, Decat etc to be done next, all at the same time, soon I hope. The engine bay picture is not my car sadly, that is Mike Ts supercharged V6 that you wanted to see, shows the Mk2 plenum that will be going on mine next. Have had mine about 1 year and will run it on the strip once it is finished. AP 22 can be found at http://www.race-technology.comwww.race-technology.com . Not sure about Dynos in Essex, Im in Kent and use CPL Racing on Isle of Sheppey, should have no problem with ride height, mine is lowered and was okay. Engine is unbelieveable at 7000 revs and cannot be good for me. Love it though.

Tim (TRW1) .. did the new style Rear lights bolt straight on as a simple replacement? Or do you need to buy a kit from somewhere so the wiring/bulbs fitted? ...they look good.. and if they fit on easy enuff.. Ill get some at the weekend.

Cheers again! (also clear side indicators look better)

Grant.

edde.. thanks again.. just booked it into Superchips at Buckingham for next week. Should have my Cliosport membership through by then to get the club discount.

p.s Superchips continue to tell me that this is a TOTALLY undetectable chip..(but they still have to advise you to contact your insurance company) I have been told that even if Renault were to check it would just come back as standard on there report . If there was an error of some kind, Renault would re-set the chip to there own setting, and therefore the Superchip will need re-loading. Superchips supply there own Guarantee that for any reason should there be a fault this will be covered by Superchips insurance. I have called 2 specialists with the same reply. Only a small modification, but should feel more responsive... be good to see if there is a noticeable change next week.

laters.

Just make sure the Renault dont reset your settings back to normal at service times.

Citroen sold me new VTS already chipped.( £295 option ) First service they put it back to standard:mad:

As others have said you should declare your mods. You could try the ClioSport clubs recommended (and discounted) insurance Co. They have undercut my insurance co by a large amount and offer trackday insurance. This is with declared mods including IK, exhaust, KW suspension, different tyres.

Depending on what you want to do, my experience so far has been - best performance upgrade: suspension and tyres. You can spend as much as you like, even bolt a jet engine into the car but if doesnt handle its not worth it. You will be lightspeed in a straightline and then have to go round corners at 5mph!

F.Y.I. I am running the PiperX Evo kit and like TWR1 said it does not make that much of a difference (does sound nice). Coincedentally, I also have a custom made Quicksilver exhaust and that also sounds very nice (but loud).

Like most have said Superchips is just a new map - it will not take advantage of the IK or the exhaust. You need either to look at new ECU or a piggyback job with RR based testing (Unichip).

BenR tell me more about ITBs (was looking at the Mk2 Plenum).

My rear lights and side indicators were on the car when I got it fortunately, same as you as a very low mileage s/h car, so cant advise you on fitting Im afraid. I also recommend Greenlight Insurance as v6Max does, they also cover my nitrous.

James.. sorry to hear your chipped VTS was put back to standard after the service, something that Ill have to be aware of.

Thanks for the info... Ill get a quote on all the mods before fitting, from the sharks at the insurance company to see what there profits works out to : ) .....no seriously.. it is worth getting covered for every modified detail or its just gonna be a worthless piece of paper if a claim is needed at the end of the day. (If it works out better than I am expecting.. I might bolt some rockets on the sides for good measure... to try and keep up with Tim! : ) Ill check out Greenlight Ins.

Thanks again for the help and advice! Great forum!

Grant.

Hope Mike T wont mind me quoting him here from his post way back on 11th Sept 2003.... BUT .. after all the thinking and is it gonna be worth it planning, I might be better off leaving things alone after all.. Im not gonna be loading my car up with Nos or a Supercharger in weeks or months to come.. so I think Im going down the wrong road to look for some added bhp.. ! Anyway... heres Mikes post from last year, kinda got me thinking...(I think hes trying to tell me, dont bother mate!!) Im starting to get the idea its all or nothing with the V6.. which is good to know NOW! Before I realise its been a lost cause..

this is getting amusing - any increase in flow whilst filtered correctly and mapped correctly will improve things - the standard ecu is mapped for crap fuel in the worst european country (94 ron) - run optimax and increase airflow and things will be a little better (few bhp and better mid range marginally).

The superchip advances the ignition a few degrees and pretty much nothing else - I too had one and noticed little difference other than pinking on low ron fuel!!

The best increase will be from remapping a new ecu for the fuel you can get here with the air flow as cold and unrestricted as possible (whilst filtered)

renault do spend millions but they also build in a fat safety margin for poor fule and high air temperatures around europe in particular and then detune everything to contain warranty costs.

All of the above will of course kill your warranty!!!

Mike T

  V6 Clio

Theres no doubt that to get genuinely noticeable improvements in performance youve got to spend some money, and know where best to spend it. You need to start with an ecu that is fully mappable and can get the most from the original engine plus any future modifications. There are cheaper options than the Motec but probably none better.

Thanks Tim.. I agree... and think I was wasting my time with the Superchip route.. (my reasons behind the Superchip were to gain some reasonable change in the throttle response. but after hearing others experiences.. I dont think this will be the case) also it wont even respond to Higher Octane Fuel or improved air flow unless it is mappable.. so there really is not much of an option but a mappable ecu.. just so I can look into this.... who deals in the mappable ecus? do you know where I could find some prices and what options are available to me, or recommend some options.. just to follow what Mike T was saying...

The best increase will be from remapping a new ecu for the fuel you can get here with the air flow as cold and unrestricted as possible (whilst filtered)

cheers again.

  V6 Clio

Top of the pile is the Motec M800 in my opinion and youre looking at at least £4k for this installed and mapped properly. Ill have to let others advise you on other options as Ive not pursued them myself. There are cheaper possibilities though so dont worry.

NO need to spend that sort of money on management alone, especially when the engine isnt exotic.

  V6 Clio

As I said, there are cheaper options. I have greater needs as it will be running different maps when on nitrous and I want the best kit for this. It means also I am unlimited with future modifications and is ultimately transferrable so a worthwhile investment. Im sure BenR can suggest some more affodable options. I already have a Mk2 plenum but am interested in what you have to say on ITBs. Price/availability?

Like i said, PM me......id have to cost it up and there would be development needed primarily for manifold design.

Thanks again everyone, good advice from you guys... looking forward to hearing from you once you have everything in place for some more timed runs Tim, what bhp (and times) are you expecting from your V6 once you have achieved your ideal goals with all your mods?

cheers!

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

Ben

Wouldnt you need a cable throttle to go to throttle bodies or are there drive by wire linkages for that now??

Youd also need six nos injectors on Tims setup which actually has the nos set up misting early at the mo for better dispersion in the Plenum prior to the combustion chamber. No doubt more power but the plumbing and Nos control x6 might be a challenge - though it can obviously be done.

Go like stink though!!!

(Cheaper to go the charger route plus NOS - 470bhp should do it!!!!)

you would need a cable yea, but thats just nit-picky stuff thats easily sorted.

a screaming V6 always sounds awesome though.......6R4 anyone! lol

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

True True!!

What do you reckon to a 500bhp Scooby engine in the V6 with 4WD - scoped it and its possible - much less weight and lower CoG - temperature may be an issue

MMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

In the front?

Not a massive fan of the scoob engine, too costly.

I would deffo go with a 350odd bhp NA V6.......the noise would kill alone.

But if pure performance is your goal, id junk the V6.

Get a 250 Kart. ;P

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

Got a Kart!!!

In the back - daves put a 4wd system in the Trophy car and gone rallying!!

EVO or Scoob (flat four sits low) lumps plus the Motec and some trick turbo/exhaust and we have 500+bhp and a sequential g/box option with diff switching

Wouldnt sound as sweet though

Someone in the backgound screamin about spending some money on the house or something!!!!!!!

Nah!
