Back with a trophy

Well after 4 months of german ownership I'm back with a clio, this time a trophy

Bit of history about it, No.007, first car sold to a customer, first 6 were press cars, got 3 previous owners and the last only had it for 4 months but was too hard to use for day to day use.

So, I got the car and had to sort the exhaust straight away, its still not perfect and some centre/rear section adjustment should get it sat mint but for now its sitting better due to a socket and some plastic tubing in the rear mount.

Paint work was a complete mess, very very badly oxidised, harsh swirling (car wash, brush marks) so it was a bit of a shame to see a trophy in such bad shape paint wise.

Car itself drives brilliant, very tight and although the shocks havent been refurbed yet they've been cleaned every year and ensuring the seals are in perfect shape (So I'm told)

I intend to change the engine/gearbox soon just to tighten them up as I think they've deteriorated over time, then it will be perfect

Full set of exalto's aswell, very well cared for mechanically by the previous owners

So here it is

I've completely paint corrected the car, some parts I'm not happy, in particular the tailgate and rear bumper, car is yet to have any wax on as I didnt get it finished until 2.30am on the day of TRAX, after 2 hours sleep we set off, didnt look too bad after doing 250 miles ;)

For the detailing people heres a couple of s**t 50/50s off my phone

What I had to deal with (a lot worse than the pics)

Doing too many miles and costing me £500 a month in vpower :(

No problem at all dan, it would be a pleasure to work on another cup after the fantastic results we got from barks CUP, have a look at it to see the results

The local commute to the hair dressers was costing 500 quid. Ouch. I'm sure Toni and guy will still love you with a trophy ; ) (if a slightly slow 1). Lol

now now :p

I didnt think the speed it got upto on the flat with 3 in and stuff in the back was too bad :p I still want to get the timing checked as I've got a slight feeling it could be out

I'll check what weekend I'm off next month and get back to you (if weekends are best that is?)... Paintwork is a bit rough in places on my cup, it needs a front end respray in all honesty!

Very nice Chris, jealous
what were your thoughts on the mini then, i assume they are worse on fuel than a 1*2?

Absolutely loved the mini, I work quite far from home and the fuel bill was rediculous, the 182 seems to have halfed my fuel bill and the addition of cruise control has stopped my urge to boot it, I've never driven so sensibly

No problem, If you let me have a look I will be able to tell you what I can sort on the front end as unless its stonechipped to death, a respray may not be necessary

Condition of the paint looks a touch better but its nowhere near fully corrected and the colour isn't really up to much either.

I'm struggling to understand where your criticism comes from?

The top pics were finished and some rather poor pictures mid way through, I assure you under LED light the car is 95% corrected, I want some more time on the lower halfs of the doors and quarters, tailgate and the bumper to get them perfect

Unfortunately time was against me as I only decided the night before I was taking the trophy to TRAX, Its a shame I dont have all of the fancy camera's others have, I will have to arrange to get some pro pics took to please you and show you the quality of my work ;)
heres a pic someone kindly took for me at the show

Probably from the 50:50 shot that is no where near done. If you went over the "finished" area in the photos above again, fair enough buddy, but usually a 50:50 is of before and after... which those definitely are not!

Ah I see, yeah it was just after one pass with hard pad and menzerna, thought the difference was a lot so got a quick picture, I do normally do a full on 50/50 3 stage correction vs original condition on cars I'm doing for people but for myself it wasnt necessary

This was after another pass and 2 more refining stages

yep, off to wash it again and apply some zymol Creme to it, see how it reacts to that, thinking about getting it c1 G-techniq protected for winter

How does it compare to Cooper S to now??
If you want my honest opinion, the grip of the trophy is extremely well, it handles brilliant but the engine and running gear is piss weak compared with the mini, although the mini is said to be a 'girls car' it has the most solid gearchange ever, brilliant steering rack and turn in, very controllable lift off oversteer and a supercharger whine that is awesome.......

I very nearly advertised the trophy today and got another, but I'm sure the trophy with a good set of coilovers, supercharger and 4 pots will keep me happy....... all in time ofcourse ;-)

  Mint 1*2's for sale-
Theres a guy on here who I sold some H&R's to who has a trophy - hes changed from the standard sachs to H&R's & says the trophy drives better with the coilovers-

Thats about the second/ third person whos said that to me was well-

I think its just the 'purists' who need to justify the extra money for the suspension, dont get me wrong for a standard production car its fantastic, but nothing that couldnt be improved with the likes of Billies, H+R's or KW's, Rear anti roll bar and uprated bushes

Also you get the chance to lose the hideous stance, I'm going to drop mine around 50mm front and 40mm rear, not slammed in any comparison to my ph1 but still enough to maximise the trophy's good looks and be able to make it handle better and more planted
