Been offered a Clio 172

  Looking to buy Clio 172
Hi All,

Great site, hoping you can give me a bit of information.

A friend of mine is looking to sell his 2003 03 plate Clio 172 in flash red (i think its classed as) with just over 43k miles, MOT until Dec and Tax until July. He is not very good with cars so cannot give me any idea of what extras it has other than a CD changer under the seat. He advised he thinks it has a full service history. Also I dont think the cam belt has been done by the sound of it.

Can you give me an idea of what its worth.

Also is there anything I should look out for at this year/mileage.

Sorry if your asked this all the time but I am just after some general info.

Thanks all :D

the main thing to look out for is that the cam belt has been done as its an expensive job. The price to purchase for will greatly depend on that and its condition. The colour is Flame Red. There weren't a lot of options on these cars, Navigation was about it really, the cd changer was an option for a period of time but the majority came with them as std.

I'd say your looking at somewhere between £4000/£5000 depending on cambelt and condition.

  180.6Bhp 172 cup (cc)
I would get an idea of price off of piston heads and the for sale section here etc, Check condition visualy, Have a look at service history (check it!) and then knock off 400 notes for the cambelt change! :D

  Looking to buy Clio 172
He has agreed to let me have it for £2700 and just confirmed last service was at 33k miles and 2007, cambelt has not been done. I could probably get it reduced to £2500 though ? Cheapest for a cambelt change ?

  Nissan 350z
Without the belt change (which is due every 5yrs or 72k) id say 4k at the most for that year and mileage.

As for inspection. When it comes to 172s be sure to check the headlights. They should be automatic, self-leveling xenons (with ballast packs) and washer jets. If any of these dont work your looking around £200 for replacement headlights alone and due the delecate nature are fairly common fault points.

Then just usual checks such as all the electrics (wipers, windows, climate control) and look for any engine management lights to indicate stored fault codes. Oh and check for any knocking and jumping out of gears under hard acceleration.

Thing is I am only really thinking of buying it to drive for a while and then make a few £'s, dont want to shoot myself in the foot. Say I get it for £2500 have the cambelt and service done, what would it sell for ? He recons its HPI clear and no bodywaork issues. Plus what would the Cambelt and service cost ?

Thanks for the prompt response all :)

  Looking to buy Clio 172
Thanks all, not entirely sure I can be bothered with it all as I will need to spend say £700 odd on it for the service bringing my spend to £3200, plus the MOT is due in Dec and the tax Due in July. Its not the nicest colour either so I may then struggle to sell it. If any of you are interested I can pass on your details if you like ?

I have some pics but cant seem to host them on Photobucket for some reason. Sounds like he is now going to trade in at his Uncle's garage for a run about.

  S3, Polo
Depending on condition: £3000-3500 MAX. Judging by the 'reality' that is AutoTrader and PH classifieds.

If you can get it for less than this, you're laughing! :)

I'd say your looking at somewhere between £4000/£5000 depending on cambelt and condition.

£5k? For a 172! Really? That's 182 money!

Any private 172 owner pricing their car @ circa £5k is going to be waiting a LONG time to sell, IMO.

cambelt service 600-900 at specialist approx
Cambelt and auxilery belt done at renault specialist £435 place is called birchdown check them out on google etc.

id buy that mate if its tidy obviously as its easily worth over 4k with a quick service and belts done so say it costs you £3100 altogether then easily sell for £4200-£4500 easily a grand profit to be made there, where is it il buy it today

Lowest priced one I can find on Autotrader with similar mileage is £4200, same colour and 48k miles. Pistonheads on the other hand they seem to vary, would say £3500 for similar car. Jesus the car market is all over the place at the moment eh.

So let me think, say £2700 to buy £500 to service (inc oil service). Thats £3200, then £100 for tax and hopefully £50 to MOT. Total £3350. Although problem with my mate is he just drives cars and would not surprise me if needs front tyres and now we are looking at similar money to all the others out there and not such a bargain. Maybe sell for £4k if I am lucky I think, not sure it worth the risk or hastle ?

sounds too cheap to be any good to me :S or he's REALLY desperate for the cash !!!

I am not sure to be honest, known him quite a while so I dont think he would intentionally try to rip me off. He said he just cant afford to run it as his daily commute is something like 40 miles each way and he wants a cheap run about, plus he is going away in a weeks time so said he would like to sell before that ideally. I dont think he wants to leave it at his house as not the best area. Really unsure what to do as I dont really need a car, only just sold my Golf GTI T as I was not using it enough. Hmmm lets have a poll, who thinks buy it and for how much and who thinks not worth the grief.

Oh and bit more info, 2 previous owners.

Cheers all, some great feedback on this :D

Cambelt and aux change is approx 400 quid offered by some specialists on here. But that doesnt include the service with it. Are you sure 435 comes with the full service?

Even looking on this site I can see cars selling for £3500 with not far off mileage, think I will leave it. Thanks for your advice though all very much appreciated.

Youv'e lost me a little there mate? what do you mean come with a service? a general oil etc service
I rang birchdown in cheshire who are a performance renault specialist and he told me total cost for a full cambelt kit which includes all rollers and tensioners etc and auxilery belt fitted is £435.
They have a website just google it and give them a call the guy said there busy at mo and is a week or so waiting list

Right well I told him due to the Cambelt and tax needed soon not really worth my while. Anyways he came back to me and said he really cant be assed to mess about and I can have for £2400. Again what do you think, worth it now surely ? Think I may keep it for a year or so.

  Looking to buy Clio 172
Picking it up tomorrow. He is sending me the reg and chasis number today so I can hpi it.

Hopefully he has missed the cambelt being changed in the service history too. That would be a result LOL

He actually came back to me after I had decided against it and said I can have it for £2500 so I said meet me in the middle and he accepted. Looking forward to it now, miss not having a car.

Just checked out Birchwood, 185 miles away so thats a no no. Anyone used any trusted mechanics closer to where I am in E18 ?

Thanks all.

  Mint 1*2's for sale-
Just HPI'ed it and

Its all clear :D - Says the value is £6064 lol

LOL @ some of the comments in this thread- 5k for a 172-

I think I did a definitive buying guide somewhere for the 182, but never 172-

Hers a couple of bits of information that will help you on the way- I will give you a value on what I think its worth at the end-

Service

43k is not all that should be considered when establishing service & what should be showing in the book, if we go by the one year rule then if it is an 03 plate it should have 6 service stamps by now-
Also, even though the car hasnt reached the 72k mark there should be 2 major services on the 3 year & 5 year Marker-

Residual value is greatly effected if the servicing is missing & not being renault ( there are one or 2 specialist exceptions but generally non franchise service is accepted as a depreciator against main dealer)- especially the older the car is-

Auxillary belt & Cambelt are due- THIS IS NOT A SERVICE

Birchdown will complete this, but there are others locally- All in all on a round trip you are looking at £500-

Keys- How many sets are there? X2 or 1- Dock £100 off value for 1 key only

ACTUAL Vehicle Condition- Bodywork repairs & wheels/tyres are more expensive than servicing so for a 6 year old car you will need to go over the panels with a fine tooth comb for 'NON wear & tear anomalies that will cost quite a lot of money to repair-
Check panel allignment-
Every panel that has dents is around £60 per panel & Every Alloy thats kerbed is around £70 to repair

How many Owners?? Dont forget to check the logbook- on an 03 plate you should really be looking around 2/3 previous owners- that is bases on a change every year & a half-

Interior Always check the wear & tear on the Steering Wheel ( especially this model as the rubber thumb grips are prone to defects, & of course the obligatory sense check of vehicle mileage V quality of gear shift gater & wheel, also Mats- are they worn.-

That mainly covers things- engine checks are crucial as well, as well as the mundain bits like Lights etc etc
& take it for a road test!!!!!!!!!!!

Valuation........ You are not a Main dealer, your not a trader- therefor you cannot offer peice of mind to a potential buyer on things like warrenty etc etc-
Therefor you cannot offer forecourt prices- only Private listing prices & they are generally a lot cheaper than classifieds, but above trade in value-

Heres my opinion based on the car for £2500 k-
To sell that on Pistonheads from your position as a non trader best price you are looking if the service is all renault & the bodywork is immaculate & the belts are done is around 3.75k

So you currently have 1.25k profit-Its never as easy as that though- Now start chipping away at that-

belts £500

£750 left-
Key £100 ( if there is only one)
£650 Left-

ANY VEHICLE maintenaince that is due or is visible- & there will be some- I would bet my bottom dollar on it-

So best case scenario is £650 Profit

Worst case scenario is ZERO profit if there is extensive spraying & parts work required to the car- possibly even a loss......

I hope this helps

Thanks Steve very helpful and I will certainly check what you mention. I know it needs a decent service as he said it was last done in 2007 at 33k miles. The pics look good with him mentioning only a small mark on the front bumper. HPI is clear, there are 2 keys and its had 2 previous owners. I have a few mates in the motor trade so currently awaiting prices on cambelt, aux belts and water pump. I can do the oil service myself, anything I need to be concerned with when doing this ? He also says the tyres all have decent tread and interior is in very good nick.

Thanks again all :D

Im not really mechanically minded- I will leave that to the other guys-...

Best of luck with the purchase & subsequent sale- if you drive it for 2 months & only make £300 then its +++ money, which also means you havent lost anything in depreciation as well on another car that you may have been keeping-

Thanks again, the insurance I had on my previous car is on hold and expires in Dec so will probably keep until after Xmas and then put it up for sale unless I fall in love with it :D

Also one quick thing is the valuation you mentioned due to the current issues, do you think the prices may rise again once we get over the recession bollox ?

In reality for the Private seller Prices never ever rise.....

If your a dealer & have access to market Trends & CAP then yes they have crept up a little- but thats mainly on nearly new cars- 05 onwards-

the reason these cars sell for such crap money is because people on this place for some strange reason decide to hammer the prices down.

the price i paid for my dci which nearly everyone agreed was a "bargain" for a dci 100 with 71k on the clock could have got me a 172 with 30k miles, less owners, and newer!!

Right well went to get the car today and did not end up buying it. Service history was all small garages bar 1 with Renault out of the 3 stamps it had. Loads of receipts for Tyres and not much else. 4 mots with some real weird patterns to the mileage, I.e only 1000 odd miles done between 2006 - 2007. The two front Tyres only had about 2mm left mot was only until nov not dec as told. There was also a real wine to the engine and it was hunting up and down on the revs. Finally it has had some damage repair to the bonnet, a scratch on the front bumper, various marks around the rest of the body and 2 dents on the roof. Anyone else interested lol
