belt snapped :(

  clio182
Hi guys, i broke down yesterday and upon opening the bonnet i noticed my belt had snapped,i believe this to be my auxiliary belt but i was wondering if i could have some confirmation on this and if so could it have c**ked anything else up. i have recently had the cam belt changed about a month ago and im hoping this hasn't effected anything on that side. I don't know much about cars so any advice would be great thanks.

that's cam belt buddy, aux belt probably snapped and took out cam belt as well ( they do this). From he pics it doesn't look like the cam belt has snapped as such, but the aux belt may have caused tit to slip and thus bent valves ect. Hard to tell though from pics. If belts were only done a month ago, take it back as it should be under warranty.

Thats your cambelt hanging out in the last pic, aux belt snapped and gone inside the cambelt, engine is toast.

I see your aux belt kit wasn't changed at the same time, tensioner looks very old. Naughty naughty.

Aux belts, when they fail have a tendancy to take the cambelt with them, theres a fairly high chance thats fecked aswell.

Did the garage not change the aux belt aswell as the cambelt when the work was being done?

as i say i'd be taking it straight back to whoever did the cambelt, muppets for not changing the aux kit

the car is pretty low mileage only had 44k on it. i paid 335 quid and on the receipt it says full cam belt kit .. as they say you are always wiser after the event.

yeah no chance have they done the aux KIT for that money, for reference we're £425 for cambelt kit and aux kit

never heard of them either!

I've seen them on the web a few times Fred, they seem to promote the use of used parts to.

That's far too cheap for a Cambelt to be changed, as you've found out

Not really, I do them for £380 with both belt kits which is pretty cheap but that's irrelevant now. It's a clear cut neglegence failure and as a Renault Specialist they must have access to a hooky version of Dialogys that clearly says in MR349 the following parts MUST be replaced:

Timing belt kit (complete with idlers and tensioner)
Aux belt kit (A/C variants only)
Crank pulley fixing
Camshaft fixings

I know Fred, Dan and myself also change the camshaft oil seals to with our services.

It's not worth the hassle of having the belt off again for saving a few quid on seals IMO.

  Mint 1*2's for sale-
Maybe take it in & play dumb to start with & say the belt you fitted has snapped & just leave it like that-

dont go into 2 much technical detail-

I wouldn't exactly play dumb but you should be on to them first thing tomorrow. Don't shout and scream as that never helps anyone unless they blatently try to wriggle out of it in which case yiu may wish to consider legal action.

This is exactly why I tell people to jog on though when they ask me to "just change the cam belt mate, there won't be any come back"... lol yer right!

As the saying goes "your only good as your last job" and you know you would never live it down, do a job right or not at all and thats why the "specialist" on here have such good names.

Exactly... do a good job and the customer maybe tells one or two people. Do a bad one and they tell everyone!

Judging by the look of where the remains of the timing belt rests I'd say its smashed thru the plastic mid cover to... be sure that is replaced not glued. Its role is very important

cant really update you as yet because we couldn't take it down today but it will be going back tomorrow, fingers crossed it all works out.

dont think the garage will take it as there fault as they have replaced the cambelt kit as you properly asked them to do as its the aux belt thats failed.

the garage should of advised you to replace the aux belt ect at the time the cambelt was changed and given you the choice to get it changed.

If he asked for a cambelt change they should've changed the aux kit aswell. As it is part of the job, the only come back they have is if be specifically stated do not change the aux kit. In which if that was me I'd turn the job away.

Yeah, could be a tricky one this. Unless you stated NOT to change the AUX kit, it should have been changed...then again, if you didn't ask for it to be changed....

It should've been changed. If he asked for a belt change, it's what should've been done. You don't go and ask for a service, and list off everything that should be done do you? Greasing joints etc, its part of the Job, and unless specifically requested its not changed they have not done the job correctly.

Dont get me wrong, I completely agree, but as just mentioned, it could be a grey area between what is recommended and essential?

It states MUST. Not recommended. However, even if its recommended they should have said its recommended and then if the customer says no, they either state on the receipt that no warranty is given due to customer request on aux kit not being changed. Or turn the work away. I do the latter.

if he asked for belts to be changed then the garage should of told him that it needs an aux kit and quoted for it. if he asked for a cambelt changed then the garage should of recommended the aux kit needs changing too.

the garage has replaced the cambelt and thats what hes payed for. if he asked for the belts to be done then he should of not payed the bill and requsted them to change the belts and had them done before leaving the garage as the job wasnt finished and what he asked for.
