Brake Torque Wrench

  Bus Winker
Hi,

Does anyone know which torque wrench I would need to fit my front and rear discs?
From what I can tel the rear needs to be 175nm and the front needs to be 280ish?

Maybe a stupid question but will I definitely need one? I've seen one in Halfords for £80 but I was hoping to pay less than this. Anyone have one for sale? :p

You only need to remove the rear hub nut to take the discs off.

The front doesn't require that, they're just held on by torx screws.

Ah that should be easier then, thanks.
In that case would I only need a torque wrench that goes to 200nm? or could I do without?

Have a look in Machine Mart, that's where I got my wrench from.

You'll need a 30mm socket for the rear hub nut too and maybe a T25 or T30 torx bit for the front discs.

There's a similar one in Machine Mart to what sbridgey posted. It'll cover you up to 210nM.

The rear hub nut WILL need to be torqued to 175nM or the bearings will fail.

TBH I woudlnt personally care if it was 5-10% out, although the figure quoted is certainly the ideal thing to aim for, its not quite as crucial as people make out for it to be exactly that IME.

Ive certainly done plenty up in the past without a torque wrench handy and have just done what feels about right and not had a problem (changing stuff over at trackdays with limited tools etc)

I'd be certainly re-torque ing the rear hub nuts correctly to the recommended 175nm. Also make sure the little spacer/washers are present behind the rear disc and refitted the correct way round, been catching people out a lot lately

^ tbf Chip your feel is probably more accurate than a lot of peoples due to your experience with the spanners, for people who don't use tools everyday or are changing brakes on their drive for the first time then a torque wrench is a worthwhile thing imo. The difference between ft (finger tight) and FT (foooking tight) is quite a difference ;)

Frustrating for me seeing people who have recently changed rear brake discs and have developed a premature bearing failing due to incorrect fitment (not knowing about the spacers and overtightened usually) and then they have to buy the parts again so trying to spread the word/save people on here money!

Agreed mate, I wasnt suggesting someone doing it for the first time should do it with a breaker bar like I might at a trackday, I just was saying if they buy a cheap torque wrench and its a little bit out then it wont matter as it will be at least as close as I can get without one.

If they start guessing completely without experience though, then like you say it will probably end very badly!

I've got a 1/2 drive torque wrench from Lidl must of had it about 6-7 years now and it has been fine I don't worry too much about the higher torque setting if it is a little out but for the lower end I got one of the Teng tools 1/4 drive one as I don't want to be stripping any threads.
