Can I use normal household silicone on exhaust joints?

Juts wondering if it will hold up to the temps? I will be using it post-cat so shouldn't cause problems for the 02 sensors. Anyone done this before? Only asking because I went into halfords earlier and they didn't stock any high temp stuff.

Exhaust putty - gungum is what you need, little round tins. If you know someone with a trade card get them to get it as its only around 40p on trade but £4ish normal sale.

Normal silicone will just melt and slide off...if it doesnt catch fire before that.

from my experience and others I have heard, gungum is s**t! Just goes brittle and breaks off.

Hi temp silicone will be fine.

Yeah but im asking if normal silicone will be good enough?

They do sell it. Get the Loctite silicone, goes to 350c IIRC. I use that and it's spot on.

I wouldn't use "normal household silicone " it will probably stink when it gets hot... If you are using a good quatily new system you don't normally need anything. If your trying to seal a leak then there are lots of better stuff to use - wait until you can get one of these.

Loctite 7920 gasket/flange sealant is what you want. Its an orange colour, and gives a bit of flex at the joint. the putty stuff will break and fall off within miles

I used some black loctite stuff from halfrauds and it was fine.

Fire putty is shite, just goes hard and falls off

Ive used it for years on spring held joints and it works fine. I'm a plumber so have loads kicking around. Ive used it to join the collector box to the silencer on my vee which gets very hot after a good drive. 18 months later and not a blow on it. It doesn't melt or catch fire like some believe thats for sure.

As for gumgum, utter sh1te comes to mind. Infact, there's bugger all in halfords good for sealing exhausts.
