As above. im not on about in a clio i just mean at all...

Mate says you can but im dubious and know nothing about engines. his quote
"you could have bought a second hand beast, you know like somthing with a 2.0 straight six, rear wheel drive, with nice comfy leather seats with loads of room, in gun metal black with 19" konig afterburner wheels and koni coilovers.."

4 litre, Straight 6, Jaguar Soverign (230bhp)....

IMMENSE fun doesnt even come close to what this car was and the noise it made was pronographic!!!

(it was bought as is in the photos for £350 )

Ex charity rally car - "Mods" include: Scooby front bonnet scoop and spoiler, viper stripes, tango wheels and a fridge in the boot!!!

of course you can, like others have said. My e36 320i 2000cc was a peach. Good balance of power, 150bhp and mpg IMO. Sounded sweet and pulled like a train at 157k.

The Straight 6/Inline 6 is a much better balanced engine than the Straight 4/Inline 4 because it doesn`t suffer from 1st and 2nd degree harmonic vibrations due to the two extra pistons. However i would disagree with the comment about it being a beast and more powerful engine. The stock Mitsubishi Evolution's use an inline 4 Turbo charged engine and are in the same league for punch and power as the stock Skyline GTR's that use a Straight 6. However the Straight 6 is far more tuneable and you can net alot of BHP and torque from them with some work. But there really isn`t that much in it from factory between I4 and I6 engines unless you are prepared to spend big bucks tuning.

I love the sound of my Dads' IS200, lovely creamy straight 6 noise, very similar to that of the Supra 3ltr straight 6

You can't beat the sound of a highly tuned straight 6. The noise the E46 makes has to be one of my favorites

Just checking people realise a straight 6 isn't the same as a v6...

The guy I bought my old beamer off said just before I took it, "It's a lovely v6". Felt like shouting at him,.. "It's a straight six you moron", but I just smiled!

true, however just for the noise you've gotta have a '6... 4 cylinder engines can't compare IMO they sound like empty tin cans when heard next to a '6

Each cylinder in a V6 is at an angle to the one next to it which would form a V shape if you were to cut a cross section through the middle of the engine. 2 straight banks of 3 cylinders that work together to turn the same crank basically.
A straight six, or inline 6, has all the cylinders in a direct line.

I think that's right?

First car I think of when talking about a 2 litre straight 6 is an R32 skyline.

FTOs had a 2.0 V6 as well.

  Mustang, S13, AX GT
I have a 2.5 straight six in my TR6 lol

Aren't some of the non-turbo Skylines 2.0 straight six?

R32 GTs-t skyline is an RB20. That's a 2 litre straight six, turbo, with about 240bhp

As he said heh, RB20 was only on the R32 Skylines though, R33 went to a 2.5 Straight 6. I didn't realise the RB20 made 240 though

IIRC V6 has 2 banks of 3 cylinders set at a V pattern to each other like you say, straight 6 has 2 banks of 3 cylinders inline or adjacent to each other and an inline 6 is exactly that, 6 cylinders in a line. I'm not 100% though

the key is in the name

V6 = basically divide the number by 2 = the number of cylinders per bank, 2 banks, 3 cylinders per bank arranged in a V formation

V8 = 4 cylinders per bank, V10 = 5 per bank, V12 = 6 per bank

you get the idea?

straight/inline 6 = exactly that 6 cylinders in a line

here's a test, what's a W16? how many banks and how many cylinders per bank?

Only one I have heard of is in the Lexus IS200. Smoooooooooooth, but gutless!

^^Correct

Theres also a boxer engine which has horizontally opposed pistons. Then we could start to get into the realms of wankel rotary engines etc!

I probably understand how a Wankel works better than I understand how a normal engine works.
