Car dilemma!

I currently have a 172 cup which i absolutely love, however I'm at uni and am going to struggle to keep it especially when insurance/tax comes around at the beginning on next year. I can't decide whether to sell up and buy a shitbox diesel( maybe a cheap dci65), keep it and struggle with money (or eat away at inheritance) or sell and use the train for my journeys! I have a railcard so trains will probably be the cheapest option but i don't know if i can face the thought of not owning a car?! Has anyone been in a similar position?

A separate option would be to garage the car somewhere and use the train instead and then use it when I'm working in the holidays etc and then still have the car when i finish uni (although thats not for 2 years!) but I'm not sure of this as i could just end up selling it shortly after and then i have an extra 2 years depreciation on it! Is my car going to be worth much less in a few years?!

The annoying bit is that i have finally got my car completely 100% but i can't enjoy it as much as i should as money issues are eating into the fun of owning a car!

All my friends at uni have got rid of their cars, You could sorn the car and keep it garaged for a couple of years? , The cups will be in demand for a few years so it shouldnt loose too much.

Sell it.

Cups arent collecters items and wont be for a few years yet.enjoy Uni and get another if you still want one in 2 years time

What would i realistically get for it though? its on 90k, just had gearbox reconditioned though, has H&R coilovers, brembo 4-pots, recaro's, tax n long m.o.t! Don't know if i'll get what i think its worth, or what it would cost if i do decide i want another car in a couple years to run as well as this one does!

I'm pretty sure thats wishful thinking. The only MK2 that will ever hold any sort of value is the Trophy.

If you look the cups fetch a premium over the standard 172, They are demand because people want them for trackcars, They wont be collectors cars but there will be someone wanting one for a track-car for a few years to come. If it has recaros, h&rs etc i would take them off and sell separately as they wont reflect in the retail value of your car, Cups seem to fetch a minimum of 2k and your parts will be worth over 1k. so your looking at £3-3500.

Could even sell some of the mods and fund tax/mot for a year and you'll still have the car but dave's idea is the way forward if you want to keep it that much

If you're at uni, chances are you'll be pissed right up 90% of the time.

In your shoes, i'd sell the clio, buy a 106 diesel that will cost pence to run and just enjoy uni.

You can buy another car when you've finished uni.

Sell it if you can't afford it, it's just a Clio. When you are in a position to buy another car, you'll probably have moved onto something else by then anyway.

We are talking a couple of hundred quid here and there, and that is depending on condition and miles. Any premium is seriously negligable.

either sell it or garage it and used it when you can, but tbh that will be a pain in the ass. so i would just sell it

sell it, do your bike test and ride a bike as your only transport while your at uni. much much cheaper on insurance, there more fun, and if your living in a city its easier to park and quicker to get anywhere. only downside is their unpractical.

Keep it. I sold my 172 because uni was imminent and then realised I could afford it and should actually have kept it. I bought an MX5 within 2 months and I love it but it is a bit impractical.

I probably couldn't deal with a shitbox diesel as my only car. I need a fun car.

I garaged my cup while I was at uni for my last year. I say keep it unless you really need a car. It worked for me because everything was within walking distance in the town and I didn't need to travel about the country to see anyone. Plus, getting it back after it had been garaged was a bloody good day.
