Changing head unit - 182 advice

I'm thinking about changing the standard head unit for something better...

- Is it good practice to disconnect the battery before switching head units?

- Where's the best/easiest place to route the iPod/USB cable - glovebox or elsewhere?

- Is it necessary to remove the dash top in order to route the iPod cable and to stop the cables pinching when installing the new head unit?

I always do, just to save shorting things out. Only takes 30 seconds to take it off so you might as well

My AUX cable goes through the top of the glove box and out the side, its hard to explain so I have created an image (I could only find a picture of a PH1 glove box, but I'm sure you will understand as soon as you look in yours)

No, just remove the stereo, there is space to the left and right of it so no cables will get caught

You can also route the iPod connector out of the tray at the bottom, I've drilled a hole then placed a rubber grommet there

Pretty much every single new stereo requires one! Unless you're not bothered about using the radio and only want ipod/cd's. Halfords sell the for £5 so its better to get them in advance from ebay

I never bothered disconnecting the battery when installing my headunit and had to run the microphone cable under the dash and around the steering column aswell.

As for the aux lead, as already said mine is routed through the glovebox. Gives you somewhere to hide it away aswell when its not in use.
