Checking timing on a 1*2

  None
Morning everyone,

Had my belts + dephaser done a few months ago, car is running fine but I'd really like to have the timing checked just as a piece of mind - is it possible to do this without replacing the belts? And is it a lot of work? Also if it's out, does that mean new belts?!

It cost me a lot to have it done so I'm not looking to do that again anytime soon. ~£600 left quite a dent!

most of us specialists will charge 1 hours labour and a pair of cam seals to check the timing, adjusting it is another story

who did the work?

Well in the end because it went through a partial warranty claim (there was some other stuff wrong), had to go with the one the dealership use - got them to ensure me they were using the correct locking tools for the F4R engine, which they did, but yeah I just want the piece of mind really

Was a bit stuck at the time truth be told because I'm all the way down in Docklands and the dephaser was making a serious racket! Car *feels* fine, but there's just this little niggle in my mind at times thinking 'hmm, I wonder if it's out'!

^not always, they can appear ok to drive, but be down on power, 10-15bhp isn't always easy to notice IMO unless you get to drive hundreds of them like i do!

I would have thought you would know about if if the timing was out.

Depends how used you are to how well your own car should or shouldnt go in the first place.

An hours labour and the cost of the seals to a specialist such as Fred seems like a good investment for the piece of mind in this instance IMHO

Yeah this sounds like a plan - I'm guessing the seals are dirt cheap?! I think I'll be bringing it up in the New Year for a check-up!

Yes true I suppose he would only notice a difference if the timing was correct before he had his belts changed but you would hope the timing would be ok beforehand.

But yes like you say if in doubt get it checked. Think a set of cam seals is around £20.

this is something i've wanted doing, as my car has always been about 10bhp down on power, everytime its been RR'd, but everything else on the car seems to be fine, and it seems to run ok too

although the belts were done by JMS before i bought the car, and they are specialists, which is why i haven't had it checked

Mine seemed fine since I had my belts done last January. RR last month showed me to be down on power and Paul at RSTuning said the timing was out. Got it back from Birchdown today and they explained where it was wrong.

The only way I can describe the difference is that it's like VVT is there again whereas it didn't seem to be before? You notice the change in engine note once it engages. Reminds me of when I first bought the car :)

Get it checked. Last thing you want is your car not running like it should!
