Clenched cheeks!

Just bought a 172 and have loved every minute of it so far. Well almost every minute anyway!

Two days ago I went round a small roundabout and suddenly felt the steering go tight and then release. "Did I just imagine that?" I thought as I drove off down the road. I couldn't replicate it, despite trying everything and put it down to me going mad (der). Then yesterday, going round a slow righthander at about 20 (fortunately) it happened again! It momentarily locked and headed towards the pavement!! It felt like the steering lock coming on, very very briefly.

It's booked to go into the garage for a service and belts done but (obviously) I am driving it with great aphrehension and only when I have to.

Any ideas???

had a similar thing happen on a saxo i had, turned out the power steering fluid was leaking so it was cutting out rounds corners......

ps, it only got worse and worse, shouldn't be too serious to fix

good luck!

Turned out to be the bearing in the steering column had shattered. The 'jamming' was the ballbearings getting lodged within the shaft! Got a new one on order, so what with a cam belt change, new brakes/disks and a full service my first clio bill is going to be quite an eyeopener I reckon!!

I sincerely hope that the guy that sold it to me had no idea that this was the case or he could quite easily have had something particularly nasty on his conscience for the rest of his life. It really was that dangerous.

I knew about the service, brakes and cambelt change (hence the low price I paid) before purchasing and once its all been done the car will be top notch. Can't wait!!
