Clio (03) engine not starting via ignition

  Mercedes and Clio
Hi, can any one help with my problem starting my Clio (03 plate, 1.2)? The battery is fully charged but would not turn the engine. A "click" comes from the engine and nothing happens. When the car was bump started it worked. After a short drive I turned the engine off and then tried the key again. It worked this time. Is the starter motor broken or sticking? Thanks.

Clean the connection between the wire and the starter motor. If this happens again, try giving the starter motor a little tap with something like the rubber end of a hammer, but tap it lightly mind.

Sounds daft but check the battery connections and as above the starter motor connection.

I'm sure Dan / Fred / Mick / Chip will be along with suggestion soon!

If your hearing a click, the solenoid should be working, so would have to suggest a flat battery. How did you diagnose the battery as 'fully charged'? If you used a volt meter, it could just be a floating charge. This could explain why it turned over after a drive.

i had an issue over the weekend with my starter motor. It didnt make a click from outside the car but inside it made a click. Got the AA out and he said the battery was fine and all connections were fine. He checked the starter motor and it was naffed. He said he couldnt get one today for me. But gave the starter motor a big wack with a rubber hammer and put it back in the car and it started straight away. Also if it bump started id say it could be the battery or just a loose connection somewhere :)

Good advice :) Also if all your hearing is a click.... connect a voltmeter to the battery whilst its connected to the car... go to crank the car..... & see what the voltage does..... if it quickly drops without the starter turning, its going to be your battery.

But also check your starter if you know how by probing it with a fresh 12 volt feed. Ive had faulty starters that click with a good charged battery.
