Clio failed MOT today, can anyone give advice please?

  182 Cup
Hi guys, so my clio failed its MOT today because the nyloc nuts on the suspension strut top mount aren't on far enough(suspension locking device ineffective [ 2.5.A.4 ] ), and the nylon isn't actually gripping on the thread and never has, this has obviously been like this since the coilovers were fitted by Ktec in 2010 and has passed two previous mot's in 2010 and 2011, without even being mentioned.

Here's a couple pics, they're not that clear but you can just about see that it looks like they need tightening on the thread more, i have tried seeing if they needed tightening more but when i try tightening its just turning the coil on the suspension, any help or advice anyone can offer will be much appreciated, having such a s**t month!

Ahhh, cheers, I actually only noticed the Allen key hole in the middle after I uploaded, anyone got any ideas as to why this has suddenly failed on this, is it a case of the tester having an eagle eye and others haven't noticed or is this acceptable and the tester just being a cnut!

Are they new struts Shifty ?, has the car been through Mot with them before?

The tester is doing his job. Not failing it for that is the same as me just putting wheel nuts on the studs and not fully tightening them or a surgeon not sewing you back up after the operation.

Yeah like it on both sides, and as said it has been like it for a couple years and the two previous mots passed without anything being said, I understand what you mean with the wheel nut analogy, guess the previous testers weren't as eagle eyed as this one.

All it takes is for someone in the garage to shout their name for a minute or for them to pop into the office for them to miss something like that even if they are usually a good tester.

The pics are a bit deceiving really, the nuts aren't as high as it looks and it doesn't look like they good go tighter, I'll try with an Allen key if it stops Fing raining!

I've had a thought, would Ktec not have made them as tight as possible, I'm just worried if I tighten them down I'm goin to crush the bearings, anyone got any pic of theirs to share too?

You shouldn't be able to crush the bearings by tightening the nut sensibly. Is your car on coilovers? If so which make? I am using the same topmounts on my car with H&R's and the nut sits fully on the strut. K-tec might have fitted the slim OEM strut nut underneath the topmounts which isn't right imo.

change the nut to normal or half nut as long as there is thread showing past nut it will be ok

Correct me if I'm wrong but there is another bolt below this one which fits into the top mount. like below

The lock nut above is an additional bolt

Not an ideal fix but for the sake of getting it retested for free i would try find some shallower/thinner nuts that allow the thread of the strut to come through.

Exactly this, I have these top mounts and the above nut bolts to the strut, no "extra" nylon lock nut, I think you need to remove te lock nut and get your mot pass certificate!

Cheers guys that seems to be the general consensus, I have ktec coilovers too, to be honest it looks like I have less thread than I should

So there's no nut underneath on this, after searching threads and looking at pics etc I'm thinking that it's just the wrong nuts and they're too big, so I'm after some shallower nuts but haven't got a clue what I need with regards thread pattern, and also should they be 21mm 'cos mine are 22mm.

Appreciate any help guys.

I have just had an email back from ktec with regards this issue and Sean has informed me that the nut was revised a while ago and is now 4mm shallower and he is going to send me some, thanks Sean, as always brilliant help/service from ktec.
