Compbrake TopMounts - Movement Modification

  PH1 172 Sport
This may be a stupid idea that's popped into my head purely because I've had such a boring and tiring day at work but here goes.......

When I got the compbrake topmounts I didn't realise that they were too small for the strut holes but as I had just forked out quite a bit of cash on them I put them on anyway. Ive noticed the enevitable in that they don't stay central and move around in the hole no matter how tight they are done up.

So, I was thinking of measuring the diameter of the strut hole and the diameter of the thread on the top mounts and then finding a suitible size alloy tubing that will fill the gap left by the mounts.

Can I assume that this would solve the movement by keeping them central in the struts or can people see this causing other problems?

Yeah it is a little bit. Theres about a 3mm gap all the way round so they move when driving which is surely changing the suspension geometry.

I was thinking about these, but more set on the ast's for the extra £10.

So best thing to do is to have no washers so there is a solid connection.

Does my tube idea sound any good or shall I just do the above?

I spoke to Compbrake last week and they advised that the washer(s) isn't required and does nothing but get chewed up when tightening the mount but the O-ring(s) is.

I've had mine fitted for approx 6months and think they have greatly improved the front end feel and stopped all knocking. I won't be changing back to OE mounts.

I fitted them with the rubber washers and 'o'rings and marked the position of the lock ring and mount in relation to the chassic and none of it has moved after the initial bedding in period. I've had the tracking checked twice since fitted them and everythings ok with mine.

I'm not quite sure how your original idea would work with clamping down the lockring and keeping the whole thing compressed down

Yeah I did think that. Maybe I just havn't done them up tight enough. That may be the next step!!
