dancing needle trick

am i right in thinking that when you do the dancing needles trick by keeping hold of the stalk that the petrol measurement means the amount left in the tank. if so y does mine read this when my petrol light isnt even on.

It will show how much petrol is left in litres at some stage but would have to agree with the above for this particular screen...

On a mk2 hold the button on the end of the wiper stalk whilst starting the engine. Then press the button to cycle through.

I hold the button then turn the battery on (2 clicks) never tried turning the engine on as well.
