Engine a bit tappety after using Triple R oil

  172DD Cup
so i've been looking at the silkolene/titan pro s but a bit rich for my wallet

so it's titan supersyn or elf sxr, both can be had for £30ish delivered

much difference, really?

Try Comma Syner-g, 5/40, fully synthetic. You can buy it from Local car parts shops. According to Fred@ BTM its the same as Mobil oil. I use it on my Cup ok and it is relatively cheap.

I'm running TR oil at the moment and its much smoother than whatever dog turd was in there before.

Will be doing a change to Bardahl oil very soon as I got a great price for it and believe the data sheet/test results.

I used to use triple R and my engine sounded a bit noisy and the dephaser got a tad louder, switched to elf evolution 5w40 and engine sounds much better.

For some people the triple r is fine, but for me it wasn't.

£50 though. pricey compared with other ester based oils, or hydrocracked synths like the titan supersyn. how often do you change it out?

6k on my turbo cars and 6-8k on my old 172, yeh it is expensive but I always wait to get an offer, the last time I bought it I got a 1ltr bottle free and an air freshener :).

Dont let price put you off mate, its easy worth it! Even if you change oil every 6 month it works out about 27p a day! One of the most important parts of running a car, you could go out and piss £50 up the wall

That's the sort of sales pitch I use for selling insurance at work ha, break it down into days.

But yeh I'm never going to buy cheap oil again. Hopefully my dephaser has got many more happy miles left in it

funny you talk about breaking down the price. i've priced up 4x 5litre bottles for £157 delivered, about £39 a bottle. just need to find 3 other people who live in farnborough now

I suspect a lot of the time people have issues like this is down to previously neglected oil changes, and not what is being put in at all

i just ordered some titan pro s (extra 15% off ends at midnight)
i ordered two 5 litre bottles and some spark plugs for £112
not sure if i need the plugs, not checked them since i bought car last july, but at worst i can flog them and still have 2 bottles of oil for £80.
got a genuine renault filter off the bay for £5 delivered

i've been reading about others saying that triple r made their engine noisy, or i guess its more than likely the case that triple r failed to mask the sounds of a worn engine :) so hopefully this will quieten the tapping.
i swapped emails with tim @ opie oils on friday and he says an ester based oil will do a better sound deadening job, fingers crossed

I've just used Valvoline Synpower 5w40 and it's quietened the engine quite a bit, surprised really. Not cheap though

Here is the kinematic viscosity diagrams of the followings oils: Valvoline Synpower 5w-40, Elf Excellium NF 5w-40, Triple R 5w-40, Fuchs Titan Race Pro S 5w-40:

Unfortunately HTHS viscosity values are not included in the 4 oils' datasheets therefore the lowest HTHS values which match SAE J300 are represented in the chart.

turns out i will need the new ngk spark plugs, whoever fitted the last set used bosch.

annnnnnd....... spark plug 1 was loose! and # 3 needed a couple of degrees to tighten it properly. and the nib on top of # 1 had almost unscrewed completely. lovely.
but at least the tappings gone now. its still a bit noisy, but not nearly as bad. hopefully the pro s will take away the last little sound and have it purring :)
