ERST - GTI or 16V

  190 BHP Willy 2

Ok i know im asking a clio forum BUT what car would you rather have and why:-

Series 2 Escort RS turbo (90 spec)

Mk2 golf GTI (big bumper)

Clio 16V Phase 2.

My mate wants to buy my Valver (which ive had for 3-1/2yrs) and im tempted to sell it and get one the above. The only reason id buy another valver is to get away from the blue that every single clio seems to be in. ( I like naples) Potential power wise the RS appeals to me but build quality wise the VW cuts it but I also have a lot of fun in my valver. Hmmmmmmmm

I can afford to go buy a cup but dont want too as I prefer the Retro hot hatches as opposed to todays offerings. This means whatever I buy will/should be a very good example from a owners club member and not a thrashed rusty offering.

Cheers

if you want a decent escort turbo, you will be looking for ever mate, i know as i spent 4 months looking for a good un, and that included fiesta rsts, and looking at rs owners cars !! the ones i saw were all sh*gged, a decent one will set you back more than the other 2 cars, even a dog of an rst ppl still want good money for,
i ended up buying a valver & havent regretted it , however i would still love a mint rst !! its just finding one !!
the golf is ok, but im not really a fan of them to be honest.

If you could afford a cup why dont you set your sights a little higher and go for some real power. Join the 200+ bhp club abd get a Cossie or go Jap.

My mates selling a lovely 262bhp Magenta Sapph Cossie for sensible money.

Any one who was at the r/r day at BB on Sunday at lunch time would have seen it.

if you like the retro hot hatches then you absolutely cannot beat a 205 GTI 1.6, for pure fun there is nothing better, not very quick but my god they handle

I prefer older cars and a 2.1zvh conversion in a RST is almost untouchable. Which is what my plans almost certainly are. Although my mate has put a 225 TT lump in a MK2 golf and sent it off to AMD Its now pushing 260bhp. Now that is also "kin" fast.

Scoobys dont appeal to me. The only jap car id have is a Evo 6 and I cant really afford to run one of those.

What about an immaculate 5GTT, I know there is not many around in excellent condition and still standard, but Im sure you could find one!

Also Williams 1?

Or Fiesta RS1800 or Turbo, smaller than the escort?

But i think for handling speed any reliability then a valver or williams!

No thanks to the renault 5 already blown one of them up.

Williams no thanks as you cant really modify one of them can you.

Valver, Ive owned one for 3.1/2yrs and to extract any serious power your talking stupid money. Also goes for the williams.

At least with the RST and the GTI engine transplants are more readily available without downsizeing to a 1.4 pushrod engine just coz its got a turbo. (but over a 1/4 mile is not much faster than a stock 16v.

DEFO ERST, no Turbo car yet can beat the noise u get from an Escort..:D, Golfs interior is sh*t and lets face thats were your going to be, Valver youve done that so move on. If u have the money to find a pearler of a ERST go for it.

Im considering a FRST again bigHP - cheaper than the Williams and can be made faster in a straight line easily.

Dont fancy a S2 ERST as its heavier and doesnt handle as well as the FRST.

The S1s are stupid money.

Had a MK2 16v Gti big bumper golf - superb car but I need cheap maintanence and it looses on the FRST there.

As for the Clio 16v - repair costs are one of the reason I may be selling the Williams - also the FRST which isnt as good as the valver can be mildly tuned to 165bhp far far cheaper.

Very Cheap and Fast are my requirements but im really struggling to part with the Williams - I know I should but it my favourite car now - and it wasnt when I bought it just another hot hatch - I only bought it as it ticked the correct boxes at the time for my requirements.
If you have the money to mod you cant really got far wrong with the cars you have listed - or just buy a old Williams and turbo it.
