Exhaust Gas Warning Light

  R26
Read a lot of posts on the forum with regards to this fault so i thought i would share what the problem was on my Mk2 172 Cup.

The first time it happened i hadnt drove the car for a couple of days, i started the car and it was very sluggish for a while. After a couple of miles the light would come on and keep flashing. A few more miles on and the light would go off and the power would be restored to normal.

First thing i did was take it back to the garage where i bought it from (oh dear) They had the car for most of the day without touching it, they then plugged it into the computer which said there was nothing wrong it!

Took it home and checked the spark plugs and HT leads myself. adjutsed the gaps on the spark plugs from a setting i found on this forum (thanks guys) and the car seemed to be ok again for a couple of weeks until monday morning when i got exactly the same problem but the light stayed on for much longer.

Decided to take it to a garage that was recommended to me called Teeside Auto Tech. They plugged it into there computer and found 5 errors and the one they were concerned with was to do with the knock sensor so have advised me to replace that part if the fault re-occurs.

Safe to say i wont be taking my car back to the dealers!

Hope this may help anyone with any simular issues

Nice one for that Jacko, i havent driven my 182 for about a week now and when i started it this morning it sounded a lot rougher then normal and the exhaust gas warning light stayed on. So, scared by the light, i bottled it, turned the car off and ran towards my computer to search CS for answers.

I'll book it in to the local stealers soon, but will now take it out for a blast after work safe in the knowledge it aint gonna blow up!

the same thing happened to me but the warning light wasn't flashing, it just stayed on, i was told by a dealers to clean the k&n, luckily i just bought a pipercross viper, i fitted that and had the warning light restored and it hasn't come on again, dont really know if that had anything to do with it but its worked for me.........

Not sure what the difference is between flashing and staying on?

Well according to the ever helpful owners manual...

'Exhaust gas monitor warning light:
If it lights up continuously, contact your Renault Dealer as soon as possible.
If it flashes, reduce the engine speed until the light stops flashing. Consult your Renault Dealer as soon as possible'

Translation: When this light starts to either flash or stay illuminated constantly, please go to your local stealer, remove your trousers, bend over and prepare to be f**ked while having sweet BS whispered in your ear.:quiet:

Having come from a Lexus LS400 (£90 for new bonnet lifters sir, thank you very much) I was expecting to have a few extra ££s left in the kitty each month due to reduced running/maintenance costs. As it is, its prob costing me more at the mo.

The BS i can put up with (and occasionally enjoy), its the cost/hassle thats p**sing me off at the mo!:quiet:

I meant error codes - same light - disappeared after ahlf a tank (right outside the garage lol)

He said its because the car doesnt like the fuel

L2 - Knock sensor (referred to as a pinking sensor)

I just put Ultimate in for 600 miles to make sure!
