Expert Help Required - Got coolant leak, could it be this fix i did?

Hi All,

ok had a water leak last week, which after a few fill ups was obvious it was coming from the top heater matrix pipe on my 172 right at the join to the bottom one, (that lil box type looking thingy) so i carefully cut the pipe and put a straight plastic connecter on it and jubilee clipped either side as renault were saying it is a one peice pipe and would cost near enuff £150 and i wasnt going to spend that, anyway after topping up and starting car i soon realised leak was still their and the two heater matrix pipes that i seperated were actually linked together at that box and it had a hole in middle so water could go between the two.

i also have a non sport clio i'm breaking and know for defo they are seperate on them, so i just replaced the bottom heater matrix pipe with the one off the non sport so they are not linked, and hey presto no visible leaks etc. i thought this would be ok, but now i have a leak thats random, like i did 200 miles to london and back and it didnt leak one bit at all (constantly checking) but got back and stayed in 10min traffic jam and i could smell water burn, checked and its below empty? filled it up, fine again for 30miles, took it for a country road blast, same water burn smell back and it's empty.. now could it be that the two heater matrix pipes need to be linked back together causing the issue or is it something else?

i cant seem to find anyone with renault pressure tester but it is so annoying.

any help would be most appreciated. if its a case of they have to be linked to gether i guess i could get two t peices and join them back up. but got horrible feeling its headgasket or something.

Thanks

Eddy

just seen rentec have a genuine 172 main water pipe on ebay, so if it is because the two heater matrix pipes need to be joined i'll buy that.. but dont really want to if it's bigger than that

ok in that case, must be burning in the engine, 5mins of hard driving and that water bottle is empty and i cant find any leaks anywhere :( does that mean its headgasket even if theres no overheating or mayo on oil cap?

i think its only burning when giving it welly, driving easy it does leak, as ive just done a run to london and back and not had it leak at all.. 5mins of hard abuse and its empty :( no overheating or anything.

no smoke either, only thing i can fink is the heat matrix pipe as it happened after i fixed that leak, was fine before that..

heaters are all hot and warm, im actually carrying a 5litre water bottle when i take it for weekend blasts now lol got to pull over after 5 mins as i can smell the water burn, but cant see it.

also swapped the header tank cap with my 1.4 clio and its still same, thought it maybe the cap.

Pretty sure it aint but i will double check after work.. mrs aint said and shes always touching around down thr

Leak found. It overheated on way home from work. 3 quarters of way up gauge n wa like s**t . Its pin hole getting bigger on the same pipe i repaired just further down. Hopefully change main water pipe n it shud be ok. Hope no damage happened. First time its got that high.
