FAO folks who have switched from 172-182

The missus keep nagging about getting a 182.

Bottom line, a yes or no answer will suffice. Is it worth the 3 grand or whatever it costs to swap?

lmao, your missus is nagging you about getting one ???, its the other way round for me.

i would buy one, but do remember that the new clio is out next year so all old clios prices will fall like a 15 year old chav girls pants after a bottle of hooch
ps its going to cost you nearly 5k to swap

15 years old....alright..more like 10 years old onwards..by 15 most would have earnt a few hundred quid in one night

I wouldnt personally its not going to be a massive change and for the cost its not worth it you could get coilover and some engine mods for less and be quicker than a 182.

A 182 against a 172 will be worth about £1k more in a couple of yrs so youll be loosing a fair amount to change but it all depends if you can afford to and want to change.

Not if he goes import route, or reno f&f deal.

you have to say that renault have pulled an amazing marketing ploy, they have revamped a car that is over 5 years old and about to be changed to a completely new model and people are going mad for them, amazing ???

ps not having a go at 182 owners, as like i say above i want one

I think the 172/182 will hold its value better than the other clios as it will be a couple of years before a renaultsport version of the new clio is released.

182 looks good just like the 172.. but cosmetically and technically there is little difference.. its just the latest thing. Everyone wants the latest thing since being a kid. The ones who got it never played with it for more than a month before casting their eyes over another new thing. The ones that didnt realised that they didnt need it because what they had was still good waited a while for something really unquie to come out.

Yoda speak.

BTW 15yr old chav comment was Funny as. :D

Yes. Believe me, it drives a hell of a lot better than a standard 172.

PM me if you want to know what I think following my drive out into the sticks last night Ive got a good feel for the car.

Those of you knocking it have obviously never spent long behind the wheel of a 172, Cup or 182. Ive driven all 3 a LOT and owned 2 of them. Thery all handle considerably differently. The 182 shows the handling of the 172 to be good at best.

Jonnyboy. Get a test drive and make sure you get to really chuck it about. My old 172 never used to get up onto 3 wheels, as in standard trim it was too soft. The 182 just loves it. :D

The main reasons I changed were financial, so to find it is a much better car to drive is a massive bonus as I was expecting a mildy tweaked 172.

The new Clio is out in 2005, but the RenaultSport model wont be in the lineup from day one.

For 3k, Id do it.

hmm.. i dont think anyone was sl*ging off the 182, i certainly wasnt. thing is those exhausts are down to personal preference and for 3k, you could have a 172 that would outhandle the 182 and outperform on straights. However i have seen some craking deals. I haggled with my last purchase at motorpoint and got my 172MKII for £12360 with Thatcham CAT1 + 1years road tax + 6Cd changer etc.

so i image i can get a 182 very cheaply.. motorpoint sell them for £11699 !! so selling my 172 and paying off my finance il only recoupe 1k at most for myself + maybe add another 1k of savings from wage off that price, but at least i can have the best supermini/hothatch currently avaliable for £9499. not including wage £10499

iam in two minds whether to get this and enjoy it. or get something newer in design like the meganeRS ((£15699 !! )). or go mad and get an AlfaGTA147.

just some thoughts.

I didnt say anyone was sl*gging it off. Just a few people knock it for being nothing more than a 172 with a new exhaust without having driven on. LOL

Also to have a 172 which is faster and handles better means you have a moddified car. Which brings warranty and insurance issues which I didnt want. The exhaust on my 172 caused me enough trouble, let along changing the suspension. But thats just me, I want an easy life.

There are a couple of things on my 182 I prefered on the 172. Exhaust, and silver light surrounds and belts. Both very minor things in the big scheme of things.

Heres why I changed. I had an 03 172 from new which Id covered 22300 miles in. It was an import. I got offered a good trade in, and got the 30% F & F on the 182. I now have a brand new UK car with no miles on the clock and 3 year AA cover etc.

The 182 is a better car, but I wouldnt have done the swap had the money not worked out well.

The same reason I did.

It cost me 900 pounds to swap an 03 172 for a brand new 182 with cup options.

It seemed daft not to, to be frank.

4 weeks before I traded the 172 in, it had 400pounds worth of parts fitted under warranty, so that helped convince me that even the warranty renewal effect was worthwhile.

12th July had better hurry up and arrive :D

I brought my 182 when I got the money through, which was tied up in my devorce.
So i have the ex Mrs Woof and a scuba diving instructor in the Maldives to thank.

Buying the 182 was the best way to spend tainted money from a divorce, and in a fun way.

So a simple answer to your question, is for me, its a deffo YES

just been to renno in wakefield, they had that gordini blue colour whatever its called, looks well nice, no demonstrators tho. They were quoting £13,500 PLUS cup options. I personally dont think its worth it to swap. I agree with 172cup_nut its just minor changes to squeeze the last out of the current shape clio. I will have a test drive and keep an open mind about it but Ill be amazed if theres that much difference.

Unfortunately they had a megane RS in and she likes that even more. Im also thinking of getting the suspension sorted and some wheels which will be the cheapest!

I part exchanged my 172mk2 for a 182 with both cup options and have to say i dont regret it at all. The car handles a lot sharper and pulls harder through the gears too. The only real problem i have found so far is the lack of a spare wheel. I stayed in a hotel in Scotland this week in the highlands and their car park was made up of fairly large stones one of which gouged out a nice chunk of tyre on the inside of the front drivers. We didnt notice it until the next day once we got back to Dundee and the tyre was flat. So after a lot of screwing about trying to find someone who sold the PE2 i finally got a tyre from Renault (£151.10!!) as the one on the car was irreparable. So if anyone is planning a long trip in their 182 consider getting some sort of a spare, dont rely on the two cans of foam as they would have been useless for the damage my tyre sustained.

Its a bit of a bugger tho trying to carry a 16" wheel/tyre in a car with no spare wheel well.:p

I know but after the hassle i had i would think about getting one strapped to the bonnet Land Rover style!:)

What about getting a 14" skinny wheel, you know just enough to get you home.

Actually, I think you can even get some 16" steel skinnies, I had one in the Ford Focus C-Max as a spare wheel.

Apart from two exhaust pipes poking out at the back of the car and different wheels, surely the 182 looks much the same as the 172 so it cant be the appearance of the car that your lady is after unless she has the spare cash needed to change up!

why not go for the top of the 4 seater range and get the Cup.. it wouldnt cost any more really.. or would your other half not want the faster, harder feel? - if so, then settle for the warmish hatch of the 182

Do you actually know what youre going on about?

I think not Kev, seems like a normal "bitter owner", someone that hasnt driven and compared the 182 against a Cup.

Yes the cup may still be Slightly quicker (if at all), but the extras on the 182 more than make up for any differences.

AND ffs, Id hardly call the 182 a "warmish hatch", hell even the impartial EVO magazine called it the hatch to beat.

if you are flush then do it, it must be better, but if you dont drive like a bat out of hell all the time and track days are not youre bag, then i think that it is a lot of money for the sake of having the latest.

I have a mk1 and really love it and cant justify spending more for not a huge difference more. Read the latest autoexpress - they say that the changes arent really that major.

Must admit though the styling changes and artic blue make it look the bollox.

ive drove the my cup and other cups and 182s at work. cant say acceleration wise there is much difference. you cant compare the two about spec though because the cup having less spec was half the point of it. the only thing im not to keen about with the 182 is the wheels, cant make my mind up if i like them or not but i think they do look better in the darker colour.

The Cup pack wheels are IMHO, rank. Colour right, design WRONG. They look like cheap Halfords wheeltrims. Apart from that I cant see why anyone would prefer a Cup over a 182, surely having all the toys and a car thats just as fast is about as good as it gets?
