Fitting an exhaust on the drive

So soon i should be getting my replacement exhaust,

Ive only rang a few garages but im getting in the region of around £60-90 (if there's no extra work required) for them to fit an exhaust.

Not too bad prices i think but id like to fit the exhaust myself on the drive, taking my time, using copper silicone so i know its sealed well etc, and because i have a bad rattle and i want to make sure the heat shield is secured properly.

The exhaust on it at the moment has had a new centre silencer so it looks like its been sleeved... to me it looks like if i unbolt the two U-clamps, it should peel off and with some effort i should be able to get the centre silencer out, ive temporarily replaced the V clamp. So id take the V clamp off and then get the sleeve off and centre section free first without cutting HOPEFULLY.

My main question is... i will have to drop the rear axel to get the back box off wont I? having the rear end up that high scares me slightly but ive done it a few times for lowering, Before I just put the car into 1st and jacked up the rear... is it fine to do this? having the front wheels locked in gear.

Whats the technique to getting the back boxes out? ive heard twist clockwise? or just straight out towards the end?

Also any other things like will i need to unbolt the rear exhaust hangers or can the exhaust move far back enough to come away?

If the centre silencer is on a sleeve, no need to drop the axle, just loosen the clamps and take it off in 2 pieces.

Oh really? so you only drop the axel to get it off in one piece?

No it should come to me as it would from factory (RS192) in 3 pieces... so i can just jack one side the the car up and fit it in pieces?

In what order would you recommend? and do i need to unbolt the rear hangers or just slide the points out of the hangers?

Cheers.

Anyone help and advise on what order to take off... then put on?

I was thinking:

Side of car up, chock and axel stands on... V calmp off (cat to center silencer) then thats free, Unbolt the sleeve (get that off), screw driver to loosen sleeve then try and get the silencer off..

Now whats where I'm wondering shall clamp the new silencer on, so i can slide the new back boxes on? or will that be hassle, and better to slide the silencer into the back boxes rather than the back boxes sleeve over the new silencer??

Ignoring the silencer after the one one was off i was going to jack the rear up enough to get the old back boxes off then slide them out of the hangers unless i need to unbolt the hangers? then assemble the new 2 part back boxes and go back to fitting the silencer after?

Main question is i wont have to drop the axel if i can get the exhaust off in 2 parts?

You should be able to do this with the axle in place.
Get her up on all fours...

Grind the cat bolts clean off, saving you red knuckles.

I just undo the centerhanger, for ease of movement.
The backbox will slide out of the rearhanger.

Use axle stands please!

Its cat back mate, glad ive not got to tackle taking the cat off!

Im going to jack up one side and yeah ill be using axel stands for sure, to get the center silencer to cat clamp off, then also unbolt the silencer hanger (only replaced that a week ago was a pain to get on!) then un do the sleeve and hopefully free the silencer from rear back boxes..

But shall i bolt on the new silencer first? or get the new back boxes on then put the silencer on..

Theres going to be a lot of jacking up and down with the car but i think ive got it sussed my in my head, easiest route etc.

My grandad has the small metal ramps you can drive onto, would those be a good idea? think i will stick to axel stands tbh.

i fitted my RS192 on axle stands, chock the front wheels and leave it in reverse gear, can never be too safe. i 'loosely' fitted the centre (clamp loose and on the hangar), then the first rear box, again clamp on but not even tightened a bit, then the other box, same again. line up the fitment of the pipes in the bumper using the tie-bar in the kit so they are of equal spacing, then tightened up from rear to front.
my rear hangars were shagged so i bought 2 new ones and still looked like the pipes had 'dropped', they were hanging low, so for the time being i've used some tactically well placed tie wraps lol

srs though, piece of piss to do, wont take long once the standard pipe is off

Done mine a couple of times with use of a pit, I wouldn't bother on the drive tbh.

The time I didn't have access to the pit I just drove to a local exhaust place and they did it for about £30, that included a new sleeve and a couple of clamps.

I just removed an exhaust today on the floor using axle stands and its a tw*t of a job and that was with no rear beam on the car!

For the sake of £20-£30 i'd rather pay to get it done.

Ok lads thanks for the help, i wanted to find out what the exhaust rattle was myself... i dont think its the cat springs, think its the silencer being a s**t fit, I might try and see if anyone local will fit it, otherwise ill just take my time and do it on the drive.

13mm socket, down to an 11mm socket (it had rusted that badly) a hammer, a dolly, removed the whole rear beam and still it wouldn't come off.

Thankfully, the engine was out so we cut the downpipe off with a plasma cutter and pulled the whole lot out from the back then dismantled it on the bench.

That was on an exhaust system that looked about 3 years old!

TBH, if it's not immeditaly obvious to you how to do this, pay someone else, it's easy.

Yeah ive been under the car plenty of times lately after finding my center hanger was f**ked and the silencer to cat clamp was spinning freely so replaced both, so i know what to do, just wanted to know which order

Seeing as the silencer is a pattern part and has a sleeve over it, im hoping underneath the sleeve it will be fairly easy to see what im dealing with rust and getting it off etc, worst comes to worse ill tighten up the sleeve and take it to a garage with ramps.
