Gear Ratios

  172, BMW 650i & X5
I Have a PH1 172 and am still fairly new to Clio world. Stripped and to be used strictly as track car. I have read that PH2 boxes had different more aggressive gearing to compensate for heavier chassis to keep up with PH1.
Now surely a PH2 box on a PH1 would be a good upgrade, mating the lightest chassis with best box?

If anyone has experience of this let me know as I'm very curious. Speedo does not matter to me BTW

Many thanks in advance...

As above. Different final drive in the boxes. JC5-089 was a ph1 box with the longer final drive and speedo drive. JC5-129 and 130 are the ph2 boxes with the shorter final drive. You'd ideally want the 129 box from a 172 cup as it also has the speedo drive which a ph1 needs.

There's not a huge difference but yeah, fitting a ph2 box will give you better acceleration.

The difference equates to 2mph at 60mph or around 150rpm, I'd wait till you need the box out for another reason and do then rather than making it a job in itself, if you haven't done anything with the suspension refresh that first, a set of new172 cup shocks are a good cheap upgrade
