Harder to steer left than right :-(

  172DD Cup
I've had this problem for a while now. Its even had a new rack which almost cured the problem but weeks later the problem is back.

What's the likely culprit?

will watch this eagerly as mine seems to be doing the same after I swapped my fronts wheels with my rears when my new tyres were fitted. How much harder is your left steering?

  172DD Cup
not alot harder.
bit gutted as i paid over £500 to have the rack replaced and after only a couple of miles realised the tracking was slightly off. i know the tracking was set up because i have the print out of before and after.

diagnosis has never been my strong point so i'm not sure what could be the problem or how the mechanics of the running gear would cause this. unevenly worn tyres? worn top mounts?

toe is definitely on the piss but i'm not confident that's the problem as i've driven other cars with tracking slightly out before and they weren't any harder to steer left and right. getting the tracking done is on the list but i plan to fit eibach springs and arb bushes next month and thought this would affect the tracking (don't want to get tracking done twice).
running standard susp at the moment.

camber on the piss was one of my thoughts. a recent hunter alignment shows everything within renaults parameters for the cup, but it was done with worn wishbone bushes.

just fitted powerflex bushes on the wishbones and it seems to have exasperated the problem further.

Refill & bleed powersteering fluid?

Check tyre pressures are equal, front and rear.

Test the dampers, one may have leaked a little.

When you had the steering rack done, did you use new inner and outer track rods on both sides?

Check the mounting points for the ARB and all the bushes. Ensure none loose.

Check clearance of the tyres and wheels and make sure nothing touching or interfering with the action of steering.

Check for broken springs and play in the top mounts.

Worth mentioning- with both wheels off the ground it feels fine.

lots to look at wobba, thanks :) i've answered in italics:

would have been done when rack changed. i've checked level and bled it.
Check tyre pressures are equal, front and rear.
yes all good

ok i'll have a look. got some replacements to put on when i fit new springs next month

yes it came with new track and tie rods
Check the mounting points for the ARB and all the bushes. Ensure none loose.
arb is all good, bushes are 2 months old.
Check clearance of the tyres and wheels and make sure nothing touching or interfering with the action of steering.
it doesn't feel like a physical interference, it's more a resistance
Check for broken springs and play in the top mounts.
springs are complete, i've done the usual wiggling of the wheel but can't feel any play

I have a similar problem, when turning right it feels like I'm whcking on a full armful of lock in about 10 degrees.

Completely unmodified, original everything (except some replacement front springs after 1 snapped, but they're OEM and were done a long time ago).

Not a biggie, just doesn't fill you with confidence

breakthrough. i think...

just got back from having the wheels balanced and car tracked on a hunter system. details:

ignoring the fact the toe is still out by two minutes, it's obvious what sticks out like a sore thumb! the tracking place told me it shouldn't make much difference but i'd like others opinions.

anyway, the breakthrough is that since the tracking i've noticed that when i break from a relatively slow speed there's a knock coming from the left and the car pulls to the left, and knocks again if i come off the brakes before i stop. i'll be outside this afternoon having a wiggle but please suggest anything i should look for apart from the obvious loose bolts.

edit: and it's still harder to steer left (sometimes) and it still pulls to the right.

I have literally just come back from the local tyre and exhaust place where a car I took there for tracking (identical symptoms) has been diagnosed with a knackered rack.

Pissed me right off!

sorted the knocking out but steering is still all over the place, royally fucked off to be honest, looks like i'm heading back to the specialist.

check this out...
driving on the inside lane of a dual carriageway with a slight camber to the left, it was tracking right slightly so i let it do its own thing and wander across to the other lane- it got half way across the cats eyes, hit one of them, or a small bump in the road, and started to track back across to the left.
wtf?

on a straight flat road with no camber, sometimes it will track to the right a little, sometimes it will track straight on.

it sometimes has a very relaxed straight on position, in that i can make it track straight, i can make it track a couple of tenths of a degree to the left, i can make it track a couple of tenths of a degree to the right.

what would cause a car to track to the right, hit a small bump, and track to the left?

£543 for a new renault rack fitted including tracking from a specialist :) new rack comes with new tie & track rods

or if you do it yourself, £50-£100 for a second hand rack, £25 tracking and £10 for fluid i guess. new rack bushes are £50 if you need them.

i spoke to the garage today. had a good chat, agreed that everything had been done apart from suspension. it so happens i've got some shocks to go on along with some eibach sportlines and new top mounts in the post. once these are on (hopefully next weekend) i'll report back. if that doesn't fix it i'll take it back to the specialist next week some time.
