Head gasket & cam belt change

Hi all,

just a quick question in regards to how much you think I will need to pay for the above.

The head gasket went on the car and the coolant dropped along with the heat shooting up. Since it did it I got recovered home and its been parked up. A few garages have quoted me anywhere in the range of 550-750 to get it repaired along with the cam belt kit done including water pump etc and it also includes the head getting skimmed and tested. I know it's a costly repair and not going to be cheap but wondering if anyone has ever been quoted cheaper.

the car is a 2001 1.2 8V and getting a new car/engine is out the question because I cannot get insurance swapped over and don't have enough for an ok car as it needs to get me to and from work 5days a week and its 300miles a week minimum.

Isn't a new engine for them like £150? Why is a new engine out the question? Don't you know anyone handy with a socket set who could change the engine, it wouldn't take long as there is so much room in the bay.

Don't know on these engines but when I used to have Rovers, it was about £400 so that does sound a bit steep. Bear in mind it will probably take them about 3-5 days to do the job as most send the head off elsewhere for skimming and testing.

Dont know like anyone who can do it which is a shame really. Plus in sort of need car as soon as possible for work and travelling to go see family due to certain situations at the moment. Plus getting it to the specialist would be way to much which is a shame really. And yeah they will be sending the head off to get it skimmed and tested which costs way to much. The 5hours of labour is costing £225 so is a lot.
