Headunit & Ipod

  Clio 1.2 Billabong 53
Hi.

Can anyone please tell me the best way of listening to my ipod from my headunit. I would like the headunit to display the song title and artist name if possible.

I have around £250 to spend on a headunit and anything else i would need, i already have my ipod!

Also if i fit a new headunit will i still have the display at the top of the dash showing temperature and radio station, etc.

Thanks

The best way (if you really mean best) is to get an apline HU + the Ipod system, that way you can control the ipod from the HU and all the track info etc shows up on screen, unfortunatly I think it will go past your budget of £250 for the HU + Ipod adapter

i JUST got the Alpine 9850ri last friday... connected the iPod yesterday and its superb.... the three good points over all others are a) its a headunit BUILT for iPods(has an ipod button) b) Full speed : the speed between HU and Pod compared to other headunits is spot on.. c) a dedicated wire from back of HU with iPod connection which can be fed to glove box for the ipod to be plugged in.... i paid £199 (installed)... its absolutely perfect for what i wanted... and im a fussy b*****d too... its only been out a few months and i think its going to be quite big.. check www.alpine-europe.com/content/english/ and click on the "CONTROL:HEAD UNITS AND IPOD INTEGRATION" bit - hope that helps...

ermm.. i dunno mate.. i havent been able to use my steering controls since i had the car due to always using aftermarket HU's... you can get steering adaptors or something.. but its never been a problem to me... the clio display bit still shows the temp and time.. but obviously not the track info as this is shown on head unit

EDIT: actually yeh i do know! derr... yes, the clio display still shows the time and temp

I've just fitted Pioneers new DEH-P55BT with bluetooth hands-free & CD-iB100 i-pod adaptor. Total cost for both units £249.00.

Yeh dave i used to be pioneer all the way but was told that Alpines are far better quality than Pioneer... well pleased to be honest, especially after i was told about the slow down using those ipod box adaptor thingies.... Tyson, mine was £199 fitting, id say maybe an extra 30 quid ish for the steering stuff.. dunno

I looked at both Alpine and Becker, before making my purchase. All three brands are good IMHO.

But for the money the Pioneers is streets ahead, sound quality is fantastic and works ace with my ipod nano. Even the hands-free phone quality is simply brilliant and much better than my the factory bluetooth kit in my old M3. Best of all you can adjust both the colour of the display and buttons to match your cars interior.

Steering wheel & display adaptors can also be purchased.

Speed was an issue for early adaptors but not anymore.

Nice1. Thanks for the advice. Where is the best place to get it fitted or is it simple enough for me to do it myself.

Cheers

Any idea if the adaptors can be used with any model year?. I have a Jan 05 54 plate and am after a similar setup to this. Especially like the sound of the bluetooth handsfree. Is it possible to pair more than one phone at a time with the pioneer?.

You can pair up to four phones and four phonebook contacts.

Being an '05 car you could might have the new CAN bus radio called 'UPDATElist'. A CAN bus adaptor will cost you £99, if you have the earlier system it will only cost approx £30.

I got mine direct from http://www.incartec.co.uk

sorry but Alpine are so far ahead of Pioneer, as faras illumination goes most high spec Alpine allow up to 512 colours on the display for matching to dash in conjuction with their biolite system.

It is true the illumination on the higer spec (& more expensive) Alpines is better, but in most cases you have to also have the horrible 'GlideTouch' system. Which IMHO just does not work very well.

I'm not knocking Alpine, I just think for the features the Pioneer is hard to beat at this price.

f**k features.. its all about SQ

If you can tell the difference between any 'A' brand £250 car stereo then you must have super human hearing. At this price range it is all about the features and what works best for you and your car.

Ive got a pretty decent sony one, just got a ipod video and want to connect that!

will the £50 box that connects to my disc changer slot on my headunit and into the ipod be good enough? speed wise and display track names etc?

I cant afford to sell the headunit on ebay, new price was £550 and now they fetch about £150 2nd hand!

Plus it has a cool dvd screen but headunit size

For this head unit would you recommend purchasing alpine speakers to go with the alpine head unit?

The reason I'm asking is because at the moment I've got standard speakers all over the car and is it pointless to purchase an expensive head unit with shitty standard clio speakers?

Does the Apline have bluetooth hands-free then?
If you are going to make a statement like that then at least back it up.

Hi ya, Sorry fella, i can be arsed now.. your statement was silly, and incorrect --> "But for the money the pioneer is streets ahead". For LESS money you can have a better, more efficient set up... UNLESS you want BlueTooth which admittedly turns the tables immediately.. but BT wasnt a request of his initially..

I know quite a few people in the "ICE" industry and all barr-none have Alpine HU's, totally sware by them in fact... they dont look all singy and dancy as pioneers... Hell, ive had pioneer for the past 8 years! but thats because i liked the racing cars / dancing dolphin gfx / and the "look at me" (chav) look of them.. but im not a kid anymore and not liking that malarky so chosen Alpine, a nice simple looking HU that does its job... Ive noticed the difference immediately in SQ...

Its pretty tough to impress me, but im totally 100% impressed with the Alpine.. great set up.. Glad to hear you like yours - ones man meat and all :)

Cbenson, by the sound of things youll be happy with either set up.... good luck

You know what Floodie, I originally wanted a Becker unit, but they only have one aux input which can be used for either ipod, 6 disc or stalk adaptor!

Next on my list was Alpine but couldn't find one I liked without 'GlideTouch'.

I own Pioneer home cinema equipment but had never though about using Pioneer incar before and as I was also planning on fitting a seperate bluetooth system it seemed like a no brainer and so far have been very impressed. No racing cars or dolphines here - thank goodness.

As we all own mobile phones and with the new laws I though it made sense to post up an alternative system with added features, ipod function and all for under the target price of £250. :)

Thanks 4 all the advice. I have bough and fitted my Alpine CDE-9850Ri and it is absolutely awesome. Works brilliant with my Ipod and sounds a lot better than my old Pioneer DEH P9600.

A lot cheaper aswell!

The only thing that pisses me off about that Alpine is the lack of a biolite display (and only 1 preout). I wanted the 9857R but that lacks full speed ipod control, can't bloody win!

I'm tempted to just go with JVC, 12 disc MP3 changer and use my ipod via the aux input.

Superhuman is my middle name.. and yes I can tell the difference from something like a £250 sony unit to a £250 alpine unit.

me too - I bought a sony last year - cost me £250 kept it for 1 week before UPGRADING to an Alpine for the same price - sound quality is vastly superior. Have always had alpines in the past but thought I would try sony - wont be making that mistake again

As far as I know Alpine have stopped making new head units with the glide touch - I have it on mine - I agree its not the easiest thing to use but you get used to it.

If you have an ipod video and want to watch video in the car the only way is to buy a headphone to aux jack lead from Alpine - basically plugs into the cd changer input but by doing this you can still use all the functions of your ipod and all buttons still work. When you plug an Ipod into an IPOD connection or Ipod interface for alpine headunits the display on the ipod turns off and no buttons work so no way of watchng and listening to films.

I had the interface at first but was no good for me so now have the headphone jack lead.

heres a pic

not the best pic as too sunny sorry - it is actually a black ipod! shall take another if anyone wants one

I'm thinking along these lines, of getting an Ipod Video with the hope of watching the video and listening to the audio through my headunit, but i would also wana be able to skip through playlists etc using the fingertip controls on my steering wheel.
so far... I have a sony headunit with an adapter so my fingertip controls can be used for the radio and cd, and also ipod (using the sony-ipod adapter thru the cd changer plug).

any ideas of how to get around the problem of not being able to use the ipod controls/view videos when the ipod is connected to your headunit via the cd changer adapter??
anyone know if the sony adapter is a good job?

cant be done as far as I know - Alpine said there was no way of doing it - I rung them loads of times when I first had the interface as I was stunned that the films would not work and wanted to know if anything could be done - all they could suggest was what I have explained above - no chance of working controls of fingertip buttons sorry

been doing a lot of research into that last nite, and came across "Dension" adapters, pretty expensive but from their descriptions they do what I want, although none of them mention the video ipod...

they provide a cradle for your ipod which is then linked into your factory/aftermarket headunit via the cd-changer port, and you can control your ipod playlists, tracks etc from your headunit (or fingertip control if its enabled which mine is). The bonus of these units is the fact that they will display teh track info on the headunit (if it has cd text) and ALSO display the track info on the ipod itself... so i'm wondering if the video will show there?!

gonna give some places that supply these a call to try and find out more of the small details!

What about USB headunits? No need for denison I-Pod adaptors then is ther? Just take memory stick with you in car and plug in

  Seat Altea XL
I don't even have an ipod, not to mention an adapter kit... yet. So i'm afraid I cannot comment on the speed or sound quality or anything else.
Anyone with a dension kit (coupled with a sony headunit) able to clarify what the speed is like?
USB headunits are good idea, but would mean having to buy another headunit, whereas ipods are everyday items and not just for car use

As people are saying that Alpine are the make that you should get (I tend to agree), do they do a HU that has bluetooth for answering and making calls and can connect an iPod to aswell?
