Same as you did to check your startup but instead:

Run > msinfo32 > hit enter

have you ran your antivirus / malwarebytes etc?

Id use task manager and watch the memory graph (if there is one on vista) whilst running a few programs, If its high upgrade ther ram.

Although a fresh install might be better if its clogged up with programs / a virus.

Although best of all upgrade the hardware completly if its not cutting it, For what you want to do.

Silly question, but when was the last time you ran a defrag on your drive?

Windows 7 is the way though. Why do you think that most businesses stuck with XP over vista if they were sensible, but a lot of them are jumping on Windows 7 already? Vista is gash, take the oppurtunity to re-install and put Windows 7 on, it'll fly in comparisson.

Answers.....

1) run MSCONFIG to find out what programs run at startup.
2) Reboot to clear RAM
3) Don't bother seeing how much RAM is free as Vista uses as much as possible to hold the index of the hard drive. It will dynamically release this as it needs to.
4) 4GB is plenty. If you machine is running like a dog, RAM won't be the problem.
5) If you can afford it, buy Windows 7. Nothing wrong with Vista (except how bloated it is) Windows 7 is better. End of.

Its probably just your line. I'd give them a call, you're getting really poor speeds. It might a problem with them or your connection looking at that speed test.

I know its a bit late to add my two cents, but jees, I've never seen so much in a HJT log.

And if I remember correctly XP/Vista/7 32-bit only "sees" 3.4gb of your RAM (regardless of if you have more), upgrading to a 64-bit OS will enable your PC to "see" and use more RAM.

Yes you are correct that 32bit OS's cannot address the full 4GB.

i take it if i upgrade to windows 7 i just need to get the 64bit version to get the best?
i phoned tiscali and they told me that it was the copper cable line at fault and theres nothing that can be done to sort it, cant even use a dongle thing as there is poor mobile coverage where i live, any other ways?
