How do I know if my engine mounts need replacing?

  mx5
If i pull away under 2k revs, the whole car judders and it sounds horrible. I read on here that is you can move the engine with your hand it means that the engine mounts are gone. But how much movement are we talking, like mine moved back and forward a good centimetre, is that enough to be worried?

Not very mechanically minded, so how much should i be looking at to get it sorted by a mechanic? and which mounts would need changing?

thanks in advance

sounds nasty!

mind started clunking q week after i bought it so i took it back to the garage. the mechanic took it for s spin round the block, with th revs around 3k he would stab at the throttle and you could feel the clunk where the engine was rocking against the chassis. turns out the mount under the battery had a big split in it!!!!

so does it sound like i need to get mine replaced? will it just be one or all of them? and how much am i looking at to get it done? sorry for all the questions

i'm not familiar with the non-Sport's mounts (are they basically the same?) but even new Sports mounts will allow the engine to be rocked by hand - don't think the movement you've got there is a particular sign

believe there's a dogbone on your model - that's probably the first one to look at replacing. it's not a big job and the part's not going to be hugely expensive; if you can get poly bushes for it, that'd help a lot (and they don't vibrate)

I take it you'd need an engine hoist to fit the engine mounts other than the dogbone mount?

just a trolley jack/piece of wood to take the weight of the engine/box

you don't need to support the engine to do the dogbone as it's there to limit forward/backward movement

Only asking because I've been getting the infamous knocking noise and it's steadily getting louder. Got a feeling it's the mount under the battery because I've had a look at the dogbone mount and it doesn't appear worn/damaged. The mount to the offside of the engine bay looks fairly new and the engine has been brought forward as far a possible whilst loosening the 4 bolts.

when i had this problem i replaced them all round.. When understanding later on which have been changed my best knowledge is that only the dogbone + the two top ones are prone to regular changing (on a sport) These are the ones under the most stress

just had to abandon the clio i cant really move it atall only forward back at a certain point steering to the right it can move,
basically one or more of the mounts have dropped causing my drivers side of the engine where the fan belt and the pulleys are to be in contact with inner arch when the steering is going left or hard right,
this wouldave been which was causing sparks when my driveshaft went to anyone who can remember me asking about sparks when my shaft went,
which mounts will be gone if the engine is moving the pulleys into the inner arch?

anyone have any ideas about my above post?
i also now noticed that my gear selector fork hitting of either the exhaust or underbody when trying to get from 1st-2ndits leaning against somthing and not sounding nice.
the gap i have between my belts and the inners arch/chassis standing looking from above the engine is nothing atall at 2 points, whilst looking from underneath threw the arch there signs of the rubbing that the sides of pulleys have had from a big plastic gromit which has some cables threw it.
which mounts are controling my engine dropping?there is evidence that the middle/back above dogbone mount area has dropped down and engines tilted back to there but can the top drivers side mount get adjusted as far to the passengers side to clear my pulleys when driving
going to check all mounts for being fixed properly tomorow and try adjusting dogbone and top drivers mount to lift engine up at the back and get it moved over to the pasengerside.

anyone had their engines dropping down in this fashion or even belt damage with them getting contact that old mounts can do?it seams that threw search people just had exhaust to subframe complaints about mounts.
thanks.

i replaced the dogbone on mine with powerflex bushes and it was fine for about 2 weeks, then it started juddering when moving from standstill.

If the dogbone is fine i cant see why it would nock as thats the engine stabilizer, if the engine mount, or gearbox mount is worn, normally will cause a vibration on idle or a judder when setting off, on my old saxo the mount on the gearbox side went twice, one time it decided to grind the chassis leg with the bottom pulley :dapprove:

I've just had K-tec group n engine mounts fitted and both gearbox mounts fitted at the same time. The difference it has made is unreal.

Go's into gear much easier and it feels faster when you press the loud pedal down as the tourqe is going into the driveshafts and not into moving the engine.

If you drive in first gear and come off the throttle at low revs and you can hear a "cluck" noise like i had, then i would get new mounts IMO

Just had the exact same plus my dogbone mounts done and it makes a huge difference, drives much better, definatly reckomend it!:)

Im thinking of getting my two engine mounts fitted with ktec ones. My mechanic mate reckons though the judder from standstill might be caused by crank seal leaking oil onto the clutch. He ain`t looked at it yet though so he's just speculating. I don`t see how it can be that as i`m not actually losing any oil really. I hope its not! :/
