How to keep a clio gearbox in one piece?

  ph 2 172
I´ve blown a clio 1.6 16V gearbox (and a couple of months later I´ve blown the engine...). I´me getting now a 2003 172 and I am worried about the gearbox. Many people had problems with the 172 gearbox and many other people talked about doble clutching and some other stuff they did to shift quick and not blowing the gearbox. PLEASE HELP ME TO KEEP MY FUTURE GEARBOX IN ONE PIECE !...

Buy a new box every 4 years and you wont have a problem! Va-Va-Boom its a Renault! ;)

Abuse a 172 and you will pay... big money. Some poor guy bought one drive it for half an hour and it went boom and bent 16 valves. Take good care of it and dont spank it around all the time.

You´ve been lucky then ... I serviced the car very often I kept my 16V in the best conditions possible and the box exploded...

Also dont slam it into gear like that black roman pierce character did in that film 2 fast 2 furious. Was his intention purely to see how quickly he could wreck the gear box on that spider?

if you drive pretty smooth i dont think you have much chance of chewing your box tbh, unless your running silly power.

i bet yozza hasnt been through that many boxes, given there were issues at first due to shitty boxes but that thing gets driven hard but he is a smooth driver so less gearbox strain by heel and toeing as well

yoz is on his 3rd box (which is actually his second box rebuilt by our specialist)

his first box did 80K including hard track work (on OE clutch)

second box was from a breakers, 3rd gear synchro went (engine was running 225bhp) that last 5K before the engine and box were pulled for full rebuilds on both (Helix paddle clutch)

engine now on 205bhp @wheels and our rebuilt box is fine, no problems (alcon paddle clutch)

car uses standard gear stick, linkage, box and mounts

The change from 1st to second is they key, say no to traffic light GP's.

very true my cup loved the traffic light gp for a bit but the box did not

it started crunching in every gear luckly this was before the warranty ran out and renault put a whole new box in

he's not the most mechanically sympathetic person i know LOL! and i have to bloody fix it if he breaks it!

the blue car doesn't get hammered in first, its never needed

3rd is the most common failure, the gearlinkage is what caused the last box to fail, if its not alinged properly it f**k the box up a treat

your not kidding Fred... my tyres had tread before Mr Hughes got his mitts on it... think I'll avoid letting him having a go in this one... well, until he lets me drive Cuppy which he promised! by the time I get to drive that it will be too bloody slow for me ;)

Argos are selling calculators cheap i hear, might help you add up your power figures more accuratley ;);)

well to be fair I have only seen you drive it, so it's forgivable for thinking it's about as quick as a standard cup ;)

hmm, Argos you say? can I get the YozzaSport performance package from there as well? lol

Just blown a 1.6 16v gearbox. Do tell what did you do after this to blow the engine.
I would like to avoid repeating this trend

The veredict was that the cam belt passed a couple of teeth, nobody knows why. The belt pulleys and all that stuff had only 30.000km, I didn´t overrev or anything. I was in a very cold night in the middle of nowere (in an neverending Argentinian road), I was in fifth gear flat out at 200 and something ... and then the engine lost a bit of power (barely noticeable) and started to sound like one cylinder is not firering wright. I thought I had a obstructed inyector. As I was in the middle of nowere at 6 am I kept going ... and when I was a couple of kilometers from my destination I slowed down and the engine broke down...

My advise: A cam, a heavy foot, and a long straight road is not a good combination... at least on a 1,6 16V...

no, i reckon driving style. I have NEVER blown a car or gearbox..... (so far lol ;)). Thats 2 novas (1.2, 1.4), punto sporting (satandard), punto turbo (170 bhp) and the cup to date............

like i've said previously, they were all driven hard once warm, its all about being sympatheic towards the box imo
