Ibiza Cupra or Clio 182

  Clio
Guys, Looking for a Clio 182 or IC TDI. I live in Rural Stoke so have a fair bit of good driving roads around me. However use the motorway daily to get to work and back (70mile roundtrip). What car would you have? What im looking for is a non-biased answer ;)

Also the Cupra seems to be the faster of the two over 1/4 mile:

Thanks

I cant give you any direction on the IC but i drive an 80 mile round trip everyday (for work) in the 172 with a k-tech stealth and i think its fine, So i wouldnt worry about that. :D

Cupra for the situation you describe. silly power available with a map too.

anywhere else, id have the Clio

(ps Clio's normally run about a 15.4 1/4 mile in standard form)

182 will be more enjoyable to drive. However the IC TDI will give a lot more comfort and practicallity. The 182's have a fair few toys though and cruise control is a nice feature to have on a long journey.

The Cupra will be cheaper to run though, especially fuel and tax.

your asking a clio forum whether you should buy a seat oil burner or 182???
work out how much fuel your gonna use and do the maths, would have thought servicing and parts would be similar price so just come down to whether you can afford the 25-30mpg less your gonna get with the clio........

The 182 would be more fun to drive, but the seat will be better built, and give better mpg.
But the seat is not quicker.

  Mk4 .:R32
I used to do a 70 mile round trip in my 172, the exhaust was loud and the stiff ride p*ssed me off at 6.45am. I'd go for the comfortable and economical choice, whichever that may be (know nothing about ICs)

Cupra can be remapped to 190+ IIRC, people will tell you it isn't as fast as a 182, maybe not around a track, but it will be easier to drive fast, and feel faster. My mapped Fabia vRS felt much quicker than the Clio.

You will get sick of a 1*2 on a 70 mile commute, I'm sick of mine as 95% of the time I can't drive it how it should be driven, and get sick of the heavy clutch, heavy steering, rattles etc. And I commute a 4 mile round trip, when I even bother driving.

Soft lad, man up:lolup:
Nothing wrong with the 1*2 for the OP. Can get decent MPG on the motorway and they not that bad a car to be in unless you lower it silly or put a loud exhaust on imo.

  172 ph1
its a hard one to be honest my last car was an 02 ibiza 130 bhp diesel! now a 172 ph1!

people say the build qualtiy of the seat would be better but i got the impression it was abit tacky...mind its better then a clio! couldnt fault the seat (vw audi) engine was mint i sold it with 115000 on and it was sweet just serviced it and put cambelt on thats all!

clio is good but to be honest i drive a w reg 172 not an 05 182 or woteva so mine probably wont be as reliable

seat was cheap tax cheap insurance not sure about cura but mine was group 7...clio being 16!
true about a map for 250 quid itl be upto 210 bhp or sumit lol itl fly!

but after all this i couldnt give you and answer if i was pushed into it probly get the cupra and remap its ass

^^ nice cupra.

I came from a Vag past and i would say diesel all the way. 70 miles is a lot to be doing with the price of petrol atm. If my 200 is anything to go by i avarage 34 mpg at best on motorways.

Ally had a cupra tdi and has had a 172, he'll give you an unbiased review he's moved on.

His wife has a Fabia VRS.

I used to drive 600 miles a week + in my 182 and would get 300 miles to a tank even when I was leathering it the entire way.

Disagree tbh, on a 4 mile commute the engine wont warm up and will probably be a lot of stop/start clutch work which is annoying.

On a 70 mile commute I would presume the majority is at speed, or at least not stop/start. The engine will warm up and it will be fine, smooth and fun.

Wish i could use my 182 for work tbh

I do over 450 miles a week in my Clio and even with a stupidly loud exhaust I still enjoy driving it everyday. Heavy clutch I can agree on but the heavy steering makes you feel more in control IMO.

Most of these modern day cars where you can turn the wheel with just your little finger give no feedback from driving like a hatchback car should.

172/182 if your a proper driver ;) lol.

i cant really comment as i have never drove a ibiza cupra.. but i dont think i ever will after owning an Clio RS.

Not 100% sure whats going on with this guy but im guessing due to the lack of replies he has come on her to get a little bit of "look at me time"

Of SCN.
I'll be in OZ for 2 years doing a bit of touring :) Cant wait! I know i'd love to keep the car also but it has to go (I've prepared myself for it!) Greenlight sorted me out with a fab deal on insurance hence the reason I've renewed with them. In the mean time Im trying to sort out a MK2 GTI :D

having had both a cup packed 182 and now owning a seat cupra tdi i'd say the ibiza . . better economy, cheaper tax and can be remapped to 210bhp.

also it can be retro fitted with cruise control so should be good on a commute

Is it any fun though? I went for my R27 over one of these, but it was pretty impressive on the test drive, especially the torque and the brakes.

I wasn't a massive fan of the interior though, but I suppose it's better than a 182...

Have you had yours mapped? Does it feel any slower?

I had a FF 182 then a focus RS then moved onto a Ibiza cupra TDI and sold it for a 172 cup and I must say the Cupra was the worst car ive owned and the biggest money lost ive ever had. The ride quality was poor, everything internally squeeked and felt cheap. If I had my car choice again I wish I had taken the cupra on a far longer test drive and making sure I went over all types or road surfaces including pot holes. As for economy my cup does far better MPG, is more comfortable the interior is more appealing and is far more fun to drive.

  172 & LCR
Massive insurance saving with Ibiza & loads of tuning options out their, cheaper timing belt changes by about £350.

  clio 182
I had the Ibiza cupra mk3 1.8t and now driving a 182, Ibiza was better quality more solid ,only better on fuel for motorway driving and was a hell of alot quicker top end, but deffinately isn't a drivers car the Ibiza understeered like a pig just cudnt place it where you want or cudnt chuck it into a corner, was difficult to loose little hot hatches like saxo vt* or a starlet turbo round the bends deffinately too much front end weight as for the Clio handles and stops brilliantly quality is okay deffinately the most fun for the price you can get one, but for motorway driving the Ibiza!not sure I could get another after having the Clio sport tho.

  Fabia VRS & Yeti
I'd only have a diesel Seat if I had another car for weekend/pleasure use!
1*2 anyday, I do a 50 mile commute everyday with decat/rattles etc no probs at all.
Diesel? Seat? Yawn!
Just my 2p, drive both before you buy!

Two very different cars, the Ibiza will be quicker in a straightline especially with software on it however it's not a 'drivers' car. Put a rear arb on the Ibiza and it improves but to get them to handle you have to spend a sh*tload of money, I've been there and done it.

  MCS R56
Depends on what you want. The Clio is a bit more fun and is very different to drive compared with the diesel but the Ibiza sounds more suited to what your daily commute involves.

Running costs are cheaper on the Ibiza, better mpg (I just drove back from Glasvegas and averaged 54mpg, although that was doing 40mph through miles of roadworks), cheaper tax and probably insurance but the Clio is fairly economical. The diesel is handy on the motorway as it doesn't need revved and will outpace the Clio.

The thing I hate about the Ibiza is the very harsh ride. Any potholes completely reverberate around the car and it can be annoying. Other than that, it handles very well and is quick, especially after a remap. Both are capable cars...

Basing your purchase on a drag race from youtube is not how to choose between them.

  ClioSport Blue Edition 17
i own both cars, a clio 172 with mods and cupra 1.8T, and the cupra with unitronic stage 1+ with 3"downpipe (canadian ecu software) and is faster than the clio, but the clio it's much fun to drive on the streets and trackdays!

Here on my country it's very expensive to mod a clio because almost the 80% of good mods are on UK, so it's easier and cheaper to have and mod a cupra, but i love clio and i prefer it.

hope this helps on your desition.

Luis.

So many Stokies! Love it.

I'd go for a 182 mate, I've had a Cupra before and they don't handle very well!

Where abouts in Stoke are you from?
