I know exactly what you're saying mate and there has been so many tragic stories already!

BUT... even an enthusiast would take the £2k off the price of a new car rather than having a difficult job selling it for next to nothing if they were looking for a new car.

But you can probably negotiate that price off the car anyway.

We had a mint Austin A35 scrapped, belonged to the A35 owners club Chairman, he passed away, his wife scrapped it against a new polo, the number plate alone was worth 7k

You can appeal for reg plates can;'t you? Just the chassis can no longer be on the road?

This scrappage thing is complete bullshit, like everyone said some great cars are being lost... yet another thing are wonderful government has managed to f**k up! I actually felt a little sick reading about the 205 gti :dapprove:

As for the Austin, the stupid woman, I personally would have enjoyed calling her up afterwards and telling her that she had just thrown away 7k. Bet her husband was turning in his grave!

Do the cars have to actually be scrapped/crushed? Could you not just take it off the road and use it as a track car?

  Iceberg 172
Once it's had that little piece of paper from the V5 signed saying it's been scrapped then legally that's it! You could do something very illegal and remove VIN plates etc but again... that's highly illegal!

It has to be scrapped. The scrap dealers have to issue the dealer with a certificate that the dealer then gives to the government to claim the money back.

I can't wait for the s**t to finish. Was a good idea to start with, now its just pissing me off! lol.

If it goes on the scrappage scheme can you not get it SVA'd and put back on the road?

The government are really to blame!!!

Just because some idiots have scrapped cars worth a lot more than what they got on the scrappage bonus I think there's a lot more people scrapping old shitters which a worthless and getting £2k for them in effect.

So the Pug and the Austin would of fetched more than £2k but who wouldn't scrap a 16v clio if you're going to get £2k for it!?!?!?!?

You make a good point, I think i was getting caught up in the anger of the moment.

I don't think it was the best scheme tho, the idea was good but not well executed ... in most cases you end up paying more than you would have done without using the scrappage scheme, not always but a lot of the time!

We've had all sorts traded in, some guy had a massive old GS Lexus and traded it in for a Corsa lol, best was a mint 15 year old 19000 mile Escort with a service book saying it'd been serviced every 6 months for all its life, one owner from new. We had a woman scrap her Clio, couldn't understand why EVERY panel was dented by a hammer and all windows smashed. Turned out it'd been the worst car she ever owned and wanted to kill it lol - makes no difference if its being scrapped!

I must admit i do enjoy watching the guy putting them on his arctic car transporter, 3 tier high but he trys everytime to make it 1 tier high by crushing the ramps down and squashing the cars lol

You're looking at the scheme from the wrong angle!

It was set up to try and recover from the recession.

So the buyer gets £2k for an old shitter.

And the seller sells more cars hence pumping more money into the economy.

It's a good scheme and it's worked well... I know of a few people to get new cars out of it.

But yes... it's very annoying when an old granny takes her 20k mile 106 GTI / Clio williams etc etc.

I understand how it was meant to work but in reality people weren't getting such a good deal. But it probably encouraged more people to buy as they thought they would get a better deal.

ie. Go into a dealer and say I want a new car what deal can you do me and they will knock money off, but go in with a trade in then they won't knock as much off it.

I was thinking about getting a new car a while back and trading in my pug 306 (it came to nothing and I also decided to come back to uni) but I would have saved more without the scappage scheme, that's my point.

im pretty sure that 'some' cars can be saved. although i think its when they are put in museums etc. they cant be returned to the road, but im sure they dont have to be scrapped.

I used the scrappage scheme and also got a lot of stick of people as I scrapped a run out mk2 Golf gti 16v, but all was not as bad as it sounds as it was stripped for parts and exchanged most of it with my mates older model plus it had a hidden rust issue and a small oil burning issue from the piston rings. In parts and scrappage I got about £3k.

The car does however need to be road worthy when you drop it off but I think this is down to the dealer.

You'd think the dealers would offer £2K trade in if the car is worth significantly more than £2K :S

I think you know someone I know who works at Dews, oly myers?

The scrappage scheme is a con. Most of the car manufacturers have increased the price of their cars by 1000 pounds to compensate. The other 1000 comes from you, the tax payer.

There is perfectly good evidence that scappage scheme just bring forward sales that would have occured anyway.

Think about it. No really think about it.

Quantitative easing - causes inflation that devalues future earnings
Low interest rates - see above
Car scrappage - brings forward car sales
Borrowing money - has to be paid back in the future

The government is just transfering wealth creation from after the election to before the election to 'boost' the economy.

In an effort to win the election. Stealing from you to get themselves out of trouble in an effort to be re eleacted.

It is treason in my opinion. It's a double dip for sure. And Gordon does not care.

I feel sorry for people who bought the korean cars before scrappage came about, when they come to sell them they will be worthless since the market will be flooded with them and they didn't even benefit from the £2K off to begin with.

The resale value of cars like the hyundai getz/kia picanto will be so low in 3 years time.

Yeah but they were damn cheap to buy and most came with a 5 year warranty! So I doubt they'll be that cheap in 3 yrs with 2 yrs warranty remaining!

All vehicles have to be taken to a scrapyard and have all of their fluids drained and made unusable. They could then be purchased by a museum or a collector as a static exhibit. It is illegal to return this vehicle to the road.

So, i could buy it from the scrap yard and track it?

Tbh I agree. Go buy an absolute shitter for £300, then buy the minter off the scrappy for a few more. Swap vin and number plates. All good.

Hmmm, i THINK they must be crushed, so no buying them back for anything.

When my auntie went and bought her hyundai, there was an older lady there with a renault 5 she had from new, M reg. The dealer offered her 2K but it had to be scrapped. or £250 and he would sell it on.

She souldnt bear the thought of it being scrapped so said she would keep it and have the new one! lol!!
