Low MPG - 27 on a 1.2! engine faults galore...

  dynamique 1.2
Hello,

I was wondering if you could help...

Just bought a new car (cat D with no service history and 03 clio 1.2 dynamique with 50000 on the clock) and I took it in to renault to get them to check it over. They did a diagnostics test and came up with a load of airbag faults, which I knew would come up but also a few others. These are as follows (I read this off the sheet):

DF236 +After Relay Supply CC.0
DF137 Motorised Throttle 1.DEF
DF135 Brake Pedal Sensor Circuit 1.DEF
DF116 Fuel Circuit Functional Fault 5.DEF

Now I have been getting about 27 mpg (out of a 1.2!) and I am most concerned about this. Will any of these faults be the cause of this? Bearing in mind I am only keeping the car for 6 months are any of these faults worth getting sorted?

I also had the emissions light on for the first week of ownership but that seems to have gone off now.

Any help would be most appreciated!

you need to get that sorted, as if you sell it on the buyer aint going to be impressed. especially as its chucking petrol out the back (my 1.2 averaged 50mpg)

not that sure to be honest on the diagnostics side of it

50mpg

i drive my 2005 1.2 really smooth, hardly ever rag it and i dont usually see any higher than 33 :dapprove:

its always done this, straight from when it was purchased.... what the hell could it be?

  dynamique 1.2
Anyone know the diagnositcs stuff more?

Does anyone also know how much it would cost to fit a whole new engine ?

  dynamique 1.2
lol, tried that inbox full :(

Well i guess its a bit re assuring to know its not just me getting stupid mpg.

I have just done some calcs and at the moment i do about 2k miles a month. If I keep the car for 6 more months (as I plan) getting 27 instead of 45 will cost well over 500 quid.

Based on that it must be worth getting it sorted!

Anyone else know anymore?

yeh would be appreciated if anyone knows any more... ive put up with it thinking it was just the way it is... but nearly 20mpg out im acctually shocked!

i drove to cambridge a few weeks back, all motorways, still never saw any higher than 33 :(

I know it sounds bloody silly doesn't it!

When I drive exceptionally sensibly e.g. sticking behind lorries at 56 mph on motorway and not taking it over 3000 rpm I get 33.

When I rag it, e.g. change at 5550 rpm I get 16mpg!!!!!

I may as well connect my tank up to the local shell garage and give a bit to everyone!

hmmm real odd... i mentioned it at my 18k service (21k now) along with a few other things (incl radio code and tdc sensor) and they couldnt give a s**t about anything i said... thats reno for you i suppose

My old one used to be the same towards then end of when I had it, no idea what caused it but got shot before that and the 2nd gear syncro got any worse. Get better mpg out the 1.6, 40mpg all the way baby :rasp:.

50:eek: i got my 1.2 brand new and when i rag it it does about 29-33! a long motorway run usually gives around 38 and my emissions light came on a few weeks ago thinking i should get it looked at??

Check the air filter and take the pipes out and make sure they are not clogged up with anything especially if the car has been in a crash and been on its side or upside down. Could also be a ignition system fault which will be a pain to find.

  dynamique 1.2
I have recently fitted an induction kit so that should have solved that shouldn't it?

Or do you mean other pipes not just the airfilter pipes?

Thanks for all your help guys.

Even if i can just save a couple of mpg it will save me alot of money

my 2004 1.2 always gets 42 which isnt bad considering my brother other halfs new 2006 clio 105 DCi only gets 46

i wouldnt settle for anything less than 38 and thats when im giving it a good thrashing.

have you reset your your digital thing for a while as when i picked up my car when i goit it it was on 39mpg and stuck on that for about 600miles till i had reset it

yeah reset it before that long drive to cambridge (from manchester)... ive done another 4k since then though still no better

It proberly wont help tbh, more air, more fuel?

hmm that is really strange. ive done 4k since i brought my car in october and i thought 38 was bad.

an i supppose renault said nothing about it. who do you get to service and mot it?

i even mentioned it to them before the 18k service, also mentioned the TDC sensor because it sometimes dosent start... the shouldnt give a s**t about anything i said tbh...

not old enough for an MOT yet its jan 2005 registered.

Maybe the 2nd and 4th faults in your list are contributing to your bad mph. I would get those sorted if I were you. My 1.2 gives me great mph. Wierd how people are getting really bad mph though, even with new cars.

Mine used to have trouble starting. One night tried for about 10mins! that little electronic engine fault light came up too and i seemed to lose power as if only one or two cylinders were working.

Weird.

  dynamique 1.2
Hmm that is astronomical compared to mine!

I am sensible all the time, only rag it when no one about and conditions suit.

i get approx 260miles to a full tank in my car, always been the same as long as ive had it (15months ish) any opinions? it seems very poor 2 me, is it? or am i just expecting too much?

cheers, russ

I think you should all buy something more economical like a 172.

mine runs fine though, only thing i can say is a few friends also have 1.2s and i can litterly pull 5-6 car lengths from them on 0-80mph. Must be all that extra fuel being burnt lol

Yeah i think i perhaps get better performance but tbh its a price i would rather not pay.

With the extra i am paying in fuel i could insure and buy a 1.6!!!

dude, in my 1.2 on a bad tank I get 380 miles to a tank. If I drive like a nun I can usually get 420 no problems. Best I had last week on a run to Dorset was 437 miles to the red light. Could have kept going for another 20 or so miles!

Those of you getting very low MPG, Do you do a lot of motorway miles?
Also do you live or spend a lot of time in costal areas?

? I dont do any motorway miles and live 800 yards fron the North sea and get great mpg.
Whats the theory behind your question?

Large amounts of moisture in the air effect MPG and engine performance. Couldnt remember if it was for better or for worse though.
