Lumpy drive for first 2mins!

  RenaultSport clio 172 mk2
Ever since I bought my 172 53plate a year ago it has always had this same problem if you can call it that.

Every time its cold and just started up its really lumpy to drive for the first 2mins, not very nice at all, all jerky and not a nice ride. After a few mins and its warmed up its fine and drives like a dream.

I no most cars probably do this but this is 10 times worse then ive ever experienced before. It was only on 14k when I bought it and 25k now so its not like its got an old warn engine.

Does anyone else have this and is it normal?

  BMW E92/Audi S3
mine does the same. i think its normal.. well i hope it is.. the exhaust also sounds.. unhealthyly nice too, when its cold :S

Mine is the same. Kind of kangaroos, then when I change through the gears for the first time it kind of 'pulls' the way it would do if you change down to a gear that's too low for the speed.

yep my 182 did this, if someone new is in the car with u i bet there thinking "this lad cant drive for s**t". lmao

Yep, pedal is all or nothing for first few mins, tap it and it jerks.... I think it adds a little bit of character to the car :)

Ive resorted to a few mins of fast idle before i drive anywhere in the morning, otherwise i get some right funny looks from the neighbours when i kangaroo up the road! lol.

Indeed.
Well thanks for that, put my mind at rest. Just a French thing then lol.

they all do it! they tend to sound like the exhaust is blowing to, really tinny, and it is due to the warming period of the catalytic converter according to renault, there is no cure for it, just one of the joys of ownership!

My mk1 does this. Im changing the coil pack as i get no power and i have to change gears every 10mph else i drop speed to a stand still. its as if my car has air in the petrol tank and its misfiring.

^^^^ PMSL!!

OR . . . you could just drive properly, i.e. smooth, in the mornings. My 172 is admitadly worse then previous cars for this, but now i've mastered the skill of perfectly smooth gear changes from cold :approve:

its called overrun :) for coldish mornings...almost like automatic choke :)

Its not matey, overrun is letting off the throttle when ur driving,ur right about it being like an auto choke tho, mine feels jerky and like its badly over fueling, then after a few mins it clears and drives fine

  Mazda MX5 1.8
mines barely driveable when its 1st started...... i take it as it being a french surrender monkey refusing to take part in the battle
