maxogen or not?

  clio sport 172
just a few questions to ask....been offered a maxogen for £170 second hand just wonderin if this is a good price and is there much of a difference in power with a maxogen rather than an itg filter panel?

thanks

I little difference, sounds great too. I had one of the earliest ones. Great unit. Only IK i'd buy. But i got mine for 100£!

Not sure about those ph1 units. Some guy on a recent rr ran more on a standard air filter than one guy with a ph1 airbox.

It's entirely forum hearsay.

If it's spouted by the right people, often enough, it becomes gospel, regardless of whether or not there's a grain of truth in it.

Ultimately though, no airbox on it's own is going to make a massive difference.

  ITB'd MK1
as above. biggest difference you'll see is in how restrictive the filter element itself is. Seen some interesting stuff recently!!! pipercross panel filter far and away less restrictive than the ITG equivalent. Quite shocked really, but the dyno proved it

as fred says, imo theres nothing wrong with the stock airbox. I'm not even sure what maxogen are worth anymore, people are finding a similar thing in the V6 air box.

when it comes down to it, that is defo £170 better spent on matched inlets.

What ever side of the the fence your on, if you dont buy it for £170 they'll be a queue round the block who will

For that money i'd be getting myself a set of matched inlets, far greater gains than any airbox/Ik/filter. The Maxogen looks good i'd admit, but gains vs price doesn't fair well for it...

Matching the inlets is a total lottery. It made absolutely diddly squat difference to my car, and the same for many others.

The V6 airbox is again another piece of forum hearsay, perpetuated by enough people to make it gospel. Like the bench tested Cup engines lol

The Maxogen I had, on the other hand, made and appreciable difference. I had it along with a GrpN ECU and when I went back to the standard airbox, the car felt strangled at high revs.

And as said, for £170 you can't go wrong. If you buy and don't like it you can sell it for £200.

Whichever airbox route you go down though, don't expect miracles lol. I've tried Viper, BMC, Maxogen and OE Box with ITG panel.... The Maxogen was the best, but the only one worth the money (as a stand alone mod) is the panel filter, becuase you can clean it rather than replace it come service time lol.

Indeed it is, did you have RS stamped inlets? If so the difference would have been minimal whereas my inlets were shocking as standard, so was a big gain to be had from it for me!

I also have a Grp. N remap, though I found that V6 airbox with ITG filter made a difference by only a couple of horsepower, it did feel much less restrictive at higher revs and more responsive and lower revs than the Ph2 airbox with aftermarket filter. On the rollers though it still showed that my car was running a little bit rich still so now I have an open cone filter with heatshield which im yet to get on the rollers. Defiantely pulls harder at high revs, but doesnt seem to have lost in the way of low/mid range pull.

I'd personally still buy it, see how you feel with it and if it makes no difference sell for a profit and buy some matched inlets and pocket the difference.

i paid 250 second hand on here about 4 months ago, id advise anyone to do it! the sound is awesome, you cant help but to floor it just for the sound. my mpg has suffered dearly due to this! love it tho, looks awesome too

  TrackCar & F30 330d
stock airbox, 193bhp, 160lbs/ft - nowt wrong with it (acoutstic valve and OE feeds still plugged in)

Fred, you allways seem to bring that engine to peoples attention when they are thinking about changing from standard to something aftermarket.

What did that engine have done to it to get such a good BHP & Torque figures?

:)

Yeah I've noticed that too ;)

The maxogen was the first mod i did to my 'standard' 172 and i did feel a small difference, the 5k kick was much smoother and the car did seem silghty quicker TBH!

matched inlets
428 cams
182 exhaust manifold
samco bend
pannel filter
decat
custom map

that's it from memory, i'm doing another one with exactly the same spec now, should be interesting to see what it makes

Might have cracked 200 with a Maxogen Fred. :rasp: Back to back tests ftw ;)

Maxogen is a very expensive piece of kit and your not going to get raw gains but then would you fit one to expect big bhp gains or to have the best out the box flowing IK money can buy? ;)

My bus should have all of the above mods within the next 6 months :approve:

im gonna go for it i think.....for a cold air feed should i take a hose down and fit a cone to the lower grill and onto the hose?

Fit the Maxogen and just have a cold air feed from lower grill or fog light pointing in the direction of the IK's inlet, say a inch away. Dont connect anything to it, it will just restrict it plus theres no need to go over the top as it already sits in the coldest part of the engine anyway
