I prefer a W7MC server with extender (be it an xbox or real extender). Gives a real media centre interface, allows for an insain amount of tuners (I have 6) and nice and quiet in your viewing room if you use a real extender. Also multiroom. W7MC is not 'LOL' - far from it if used correctly.

Real Extender being what hardware? I do agree in the respect of flexibility as you have use multiple tuners as you have stated.

However, the Mac Mini, uses hardly any power, with Plex or XBMC, it's a great tool. Very quiet too. It all comes down to personal preference though.

i <3 my WMC pc.

i like to run itunes in the background, so i can use the remote app to play stuff through my amp with the TV switched off which is quite impressive to the technically uninclined.

also it runs my 'legal downloading system' by auto loading 'legal download' files from my drop box after i put them there from my mobile... not sure if a mac mini has so much functionality but it's personal preference i suppose.

the only thing i did wrong was run it with a 'normal' psu instead of a laptop PSU - i might change it and then it would be 100% silent/no moving parts :D

Did I miss something?

Set up correctly with media browser, stark covers, metabrower etc. It's one of the best media centers going.

Supporting most files and extenders

It not just a simple plug and play, but you can't beat it

well for a start the op's question was "What is there on the market, pref one which can handle heavy streaming and has HDMI out."

not what software to run on his pc.

Well software would have to come into it unless he got a boxee box or something similar.

Depends what you want to do.

Right, but my htpc can handle heavy streaming and has hdmi output, plus many other outputs like HD satellite cards etc.
I only use my htpc as a media center, which is what the op asked for.
