Metal Gear Solid 4

Believe it or not, I only just started this at the weekend, having completely rinsed Uncharted 2 since Boxing Day, collecting all the treasures, bonuses and extras.

First impressions of MGS4 are it's really good. However, I'm finding it really hard to start off with. Im only about an hour or so into it, but it's really difficult not being detected by the soldiers. I'm looting the place and finding all the little hideaways and crawl tunnels, but then suddenly I'm spotted and although it's a stealth mission, I end up firing shots off and ruining the stealth approach.
Also, if I'm under the cardboard box and a guard is curious, is there any way to make him avoid lifting the box to find me there? The only resulting thing to do is unload a round or two in the guys head.

Anyway, I've just collected the MG Mk2 and got into the hideaway so that's where I am now. Like I say, it feels like it's starting to open up, and I'm sure it does, but it seems a bit hard to begin with.

Also enjoying the cut scenes thus far, I realise there's plenty to come.

I remember when I first got MGS4, couldn't get away from it....what a game! Did you ever play the first 3?

My approach is to observe what the guards do then go from there. If there's only one guard patrolling then sneak up to him, steal his goodies then...pop a cap in his ass brap brap brap brap. Stealth kills are the most satisfying though!

Or if you prefer to not get your hands dirty then you can always go for the distraction method. Knock on a wall or something and run around a different direction while the guard checks it out.

Either way, it helps if you're handy with the mk.22. A shot to the head knocks them out and off you go. Be quick though as once they awake they will come looking for you.

You make me want to play it now!

See, because I'm relatively new to the game, there's so much I'll learn over the coming days and weeks. No doubt going back to this stage after a while when I've done more in the game will become so much easier and I'll have so many other options on how to tackle the guards etc.

Cheers for the words, mate.

It's staggering mate. Think of it as an experience, rather than an out-and-out action game.

TBH, the start is a bit more sneaky/shooty/sneaky... as you get into the plot, in closes in a lot more, and goes sneakier.

It's in my top three, easy.

No probs dude. Does that mean you haven't played MGS1-3? I would do them first as the story can be quite confusing at times. MGS4 essentially ties together all the plot lines from 1-3.

Yeah I've played the others, but TBH I've played them as games rather than piecing together bits of the plot and character models, so I've probably forgotten just who is who and why they are there. I mean, MGS4 was released in 2007/08 IIRC? That's 2 years at the very least since I've played a MG game.

Canny wait for the new one getting released on the XBox!

Its only a hack and slash action game mate, I wouldn't get too excited. Try Devil May Cry 4??

Scutch you do get tranq guns and darts and all sorts of stuff to cause distractions ti the guards, pick up a p**n mag, drop it on the floor and when the guard finds it it will give you an element of time!

And if your feeling pervy flick through the pages yourself ;)

I already tried that, mate. I can't see anything, it's just Snake getting a perv and not me. LOL. Although I did get to zoom in on the mag and see the front and back covers within the Weapons menu

I thought about getting a ps3 just for this but its coming to xbox.
I got a ps2 on launch for metal gear on that.
Metal gear solid on the ps1 is one of the best games ever.

wait until your a few hours in to really make the use of the stealth etc.

the game opens up then. the start is tricky, and there are a lot of controls, but it will get to a point where it is second nature.

You've got patience, Scutch - I'll give you that. I remember playing a demo of one of the MGS games on the PS1 and completing it - but I got SO infuriated with it.

I just hate games where you're tip-toeing about. 1mm of your foot showing and alarms are tripped and half an army is after you.

I can understand why people like games like that, but they do nothig at all for me. Same with the Theif series on the PC. Absolute epic games in their own right - but they just switch me off. Having to spend most of your 'viewing time' looking out from the shadows? No ta.

its the sense of acheivement you get when you get through a section without being noticed. running and gunning can only bring so much enjoyment. choping and changing the way you play keeps it new and interesting.

imo

I think one of the accomplishments at the end is rewarded for not being detected a maximum of 10 times and only 3 kills - in the entire game! :S

F*ck me, that's going to be tough, so I'll settle with what I'm doing at the moment, which is stealth about, get spotted, panic and wildly fire while running before hiding in a cabinet or my cardboard box again! :clown:

I have to say though, the physics and feel of the game is brilliant. Also, when I got the new weapons from Mk2, it became that little bit more open and easier, knowing I could shoot the mofo's. Getting past that barricade during Act 1 with the two groups fighting would be very tough, though, if I were to use no force at all.

scutch theres a thing on the PSN that you can DL for free and it gives you all the info you need about the previous games and the whole story, but you can only view parts as you havent completed MGS4 yet (its linked) if you have the time to read it its very interesting

FLOL! For a game with a fair amount of weapons in it, that just sounds kack to me. A bit like getting Forza - but rather than actually race the cars - why not have an entire career made up of PC'ing and detailing the cars instead? ;)

^^LOl yes it has a superb arsenal but your not supposed to use them! TBH I went through with the M4, red dot sight and silencer - pwnage!

Finish the entire game on big boss extreme under 24 hrs don't be seen and don't kill anyone and u get fox die emblem ,stealth and a gun. I was hooked solid on this game for about 2 months unlocking everything. Loved it. Can't wait for next 1

How the hell can you get through the game with no kills when there are bosses on certain acts? Are these omitted or do you have to spare them, too?

You have to use the sleeping gun thing on them. Takes the piss. You get something for not killing the bosses iirc too.

Why do you get a gun? You can't use it to do well, apparently? ;)

I can imagine they wont be too bad (after seeing the HD collections ones, they're tricky by relatively manageable)

Though they might throw some bad ones into the mix like not getting caught all game, which will be muchos gay.

Still looking for a reason to play through it again though. I wasnt driven to play it through a second time after I finished watching it rather than playing it. And things in 4 will make much more sense now that Ive played through Peace Walker and Snake Eater in HD!

Only yesterday i started MGS ( first one ) what a f**king game!!!! If only Kojima would make a full on PS3 port of it.... 2/3/4 to follow for me.
