Modifying cars to a high standard then selling them on straight after..

As above, i've been noticed this a lot lately where people have spend a fortune on car parts.. turinis, bucket seats, exhaust, coilovers etc, and seem to get the car just how they want it to look- drive then sell it on.

Is this due to boredom, or that they just want a change?

personally i got the car the way i wanted it then realised there wasnt much else i could do to improve it without spending thousands more, so got bored and sold on.

This also confuses me, I'd return it to standard then sell myself.

Ive been thinking about selling. But I'll probably be breaking it, as it's worth loads more in parts.

Think you just realise you've done all you can really, and it's time to move onto better things.

like martin said you do as much as your budget lets you then get bored and sell on for another project

Only reason I sold my 1.2 is because 172 insurance finally became affordable. Would never have sold it otherwise, was still loads more ideas I had for that car. Wouldn't have bothered with the coilies if I'd have known I was getting rid of it so soon after.

There seem to be a lot of people modding to a track standard, never tracking the f**king thing, then realising they've compromised it too much for road use.

Yes, i have noticed that too.

I've had my 172 now for 4 years now, and TBH I'm enjoying driving it now more then i ever had.

Indeed. Spent yesterday showing a 997 carrera how it's done on track. Suprisingly quick once you get the set-up correct!

lol thats so true Warren! you only need to look in 'clio projects' section and only a hand full of people actually do track days in them!

Trophy FTW I say, best of both...

I dread to think about the money thats weve put in to our track car, doubt we will ever sell it though

2 and a half years later and im still loving mine!

The key for me is to do things in moderation.

One step at a time so to speak, so when something breaks/wears out etc then replace it with someting better :)

Mine will be with me for as long as possible!

It's human nature combined with the ways of modern society. People enjoy the rush of progression but fail to appreciate what they have once it's finished. Nothing wrong with it as such, but in a decade where everything is available it's not surprising that people get restless.

If/when I get fed up with mine, then it'll be sold in bits. Worth loads more, then sell the shell with cage in separate if I haven't crashed it. It see's track duty and get's used properly for the record.

I find this all a bit weird as well. Don't think it's limited to people on here though.

''All the gear and no idea''

Springs to mind with this forum.

Indeed. People see turini or recaro and grab them without thinking about the alternatives. Or spend silly money on power for a car that can struggle laying down 170bhp!

A bit of a sweeping statement there mate... there are some very knowledgable folks on here as well. But I do get your point. :D

It is a sweeping statement, but its true!

I've never known a forum like it. Spend £xxx on turning a perfectly good car into a stiff/rattly/loud track car only to sell it on as its not practical for the daily commute! (This is not aimed at anyone in particular!!)

Is it all a search for individuallity and our quest to be different from the herd. Sh*t, I forgot that this is CS.

I modify my car to my taste and because I like it, not to follow the herd and to try to be different. I know how much money my son has spent on his cars and then sold them on at a loss as he is bored and is always working on his next project. Yes sometimes you may get it wrong and go in a direction that compromises the performance you already had. Most mods are correctable but generally a car is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay for it at the end of the day. With my Clio I am in it for the long haul now and still have a smile on my face when I drive it, so will keep it for a while longer. (3 years ownership next month). I will take it around the track in the near future as brakes will be my next upgrade when finances allow.

So the consensus would be that you will never get back what you put in to your car, but I am glad that myself and my son are addicted to petrol than anything else.

People are sheep. See something, copy it. The track cars on here are just that, track cars. Then someone will put buckets in, 750lb springs on some coilovers and complain its too hard. Its hard because you're a scene kid and copied what someones done for a purpose and used it generally.

lol at this.

Soo many valid points, 'all the gear, no idea' being one ;) How many track cars actually make it onto track regularly after all? Most people dont even realise that a standard car driven well will be far quicker than a 'track car' driven by a numpty anyway ...

Some people get pleasure out of building the cars mind you, others realise they really shouldnt have spent 10k on modifying a clio, have a panic & flog the lot when there wife/girlfriend finds out/wants a new kitchen ...

I've never understood why folk do it tbh, to me most don't even get the time to enjoy it. They'll spend a load modding up the thing, then never use it to it's full potential.

It's like the 'show car' type people, so many of them do it, get it into a mag - then sell it straight way, thery seem to think that a mag feature adds about five grand to the value of teh car. Deluded isn't the word.

The ones who expect to get back the price they paid for the mods do my head in, then they moan that no one wants to pay the price for the stuff, obviously they won't as it's secondhand now & you can get new for a bit more than they want.

I keep thinking that one day i'll get a blue 172cup (if there are any left when I do ;)) I'll either be getting one that's been properly sorted & folk know of it, or i'll probs throw a few quid at it myself (depending on funds) I'd take my time on things, not just hear some brand names (ala shopping list tylee) and throw the bits on it. I sure wouldn't sell it as soon as the stuff was on it. That's just daft.

Then there is the other debate, why not just save the money & buy a faster car from the off ???......

PMSL! Is so is!

Agree with topic. the RS is a great car in std guise, Mark certainly seems to go ok in his cup with basic mods.

Rofl @ basic. Awesome, but utterly unuseable as an everyday road car!

This I know, but look at it now! The KW's haven't made the s.lag drastically quicker, just more fun.
