My AST Top Mounts question (PICS)

  TrackCar & F30 330d
Is this how they are suppose to go together?

So the black part goes underneeth the car on top of the coilover and the orange part goes on top of the car.

That sounds and looks right. No instructions included? Im awaiting mine to be delivered but I guess you got the last set from Kam :(

everything goes underneath apart from the top collar held on with the 3 allen keys.....wish I had got pics of putting them on now...

you'l see when you put it together and poke the top through how it fits the hole in the strut perfectly, then the top collar is like the retainer...

Yeah i must have, i was SOOO shocked when they arrived, i was expecting them in a few weeks.

Ok so i will undo the 3 allen keys and put everything underneeth.

I dont have a 7mm allen key to undo my old top mounts tut. So i'm off out to halfrauds.

Nice one! I've actually already got them on my car, but I'm just interested in the lower orange part and how they connect. Is there just a complete circle of holes for the allen bolts to mate up to?

No, only three holes...

For adjustment you just slacken the 3 allen keys and twist the top mount, then tighten them to hold it in position

Hi guys, would you be able to tell me the weight and dimensions of the AST top mounts. My brother is in the UK and might be able to bring it back to me here in Australia if not to heavy and bulky.
cheers

LOL i just went to my local renault dealer to ask if he could wizz my top mounts and when i went to start her back up the F***ER wouldnt start. Waited 60mins for the RAC but i got her to start again. Right now i'm back homw i'l get back to fitting these top mounts lol

  TrackCar & F30 330d
I think there is somthing wrong with them :(

You can see that it sits flush here.
IMG_3172-1.jpg

But the next part to go on isnt big enough to meet it.
IMG_3173-1.jpg

And therefor when the top part goes on there isnt much thread for the bolt to go on.

HELP HELP HELP, I'v gota drive back to uni Saturday :(

Hmmmmmm I think i should be ok not to use the bit that doesnt fit. I'm gona give it a go, Unless anyone else has an oppionion?

when i fitted mine to the ast coilovers you need to raise the ride height of the car about 20-30mm to get the ride height the same, this will get rid of the gap.

the nut on the top sits inside the top mount aswell, if im not massivly mistaken seem ok to me.

  TrackCar & F30 330d
ALL SORTED, they are now on and the cars back on the ground. But it is far too low. It scrapes at 20mph :( and i dont have any c-spaners, FAIL.
Hopefully one of my mates will.

I just thought i'd bring this thread up again as the AST topmounts have not fitted to my H&R's correctly.

I will try explain what i think the problem is and what i have done but its not correct.

You see that the two plates do not meet in the pics above, This is because the top plate would not fit over the part of the coilover so it could sit on the bearing. If i built them up like this as i was suppose to then the bearing (the bottom plate) would not be sat where it is suppose to when i lowered it back down. You can see that it sits flush with the pole that goes through the middle. If i had lowered the car back down onto the floor (after attaching the rest of the topmount) then the spring would have pushed the bearing up, out of its place and therefor not be centrel.
Even if i had raised the hight it would not have made a difference to where the bearing needs to sit as it could move around.

So what i had to do was miss out the top plate so the orange part of the topmount sat on the bearing, the bolt then went ontop and tightend up. however, the topmount bolt now loosens off occationally.

I'm not trying to kick up a fuss but i am 99% sure i am right and that the topmount does not fit to my H&R's correctly.

Does anybody understand where i think the problem is and agree with me?

I see what you mean....BUT....that top plate that you say wont go down far enough, is the plate that is machined dependent on the model of coilover they are being used on, so it stops after the thread and fits perfectly (exactly like in the picture)...

Mine is exactly like that, but I have only about half an inch gap. As soon as you let the car down onto the floor, the weight of it brings everything together and ive never had an issue...

ANSWER = Buy your stuff from Curtis and not Kam Racing. Curtis will send you the right stuff that will fit first time. If it needs machining then this will be done before sending. Ive been talking to him about all this (even tho i dont have clio anymore)

Just for reference to my other post...Mine were machined to fit the coilovers by powerstation, and look exactly like the picture (maybe tiny bit less gap)

Just to say, the guys at KAM racing machine the parts to order and we had a perfectly successful group buy when I ordered mine. They have been on the car for a good long while and transformed the car.

So to be honest Dan, you have jumped to conclusions and made quite a generalisation fella. This is the first thread I've seen regarding AST mounts not fitting.

  TrackCar & F30 330d
I have sent Kam Racing an email. I'm sure it will get sorted.
Surly the top plate just needs machiening a little bit more or somthing :)

that first pic is mine :)

urm, that part that your finger and thumb are on looks like it shouldnt even be on there? ive not read the full thread so there might be a reason for this though...

That part is the bearing, the plate should sit on the bearing but it wont reach it.
(thanks for the pic ;))

How much wider is the shaft on the H&Rs than the hole on the top mounts lad?

The shaft must be only 0.5mm too wide for it to slide over :(

  TrackCar & F30 330d
I knew someone wood. ;)

Defo sounds like a machining mistake then; I have every confidence in KAM racing from my dealings with them.

Yeah so do i, I have bought other stuff from them before and am sure i still will.

Everybody makes little mistakes occationally, as long as its fixed i will have no problem lol

Fire off a quick email, mine was replied to in an hour, which, for a relatively small company that is blatantly busy, I feel is a good response time.

  TrackCar & F30 330d
I sent an email a few hours ago to Kam Racing (the company not the CS name), but its coming up to christmas so i'm sure they are busy :)

I've just found this picture, This is how it is suppose to look like. The two plates touch.

Can I just ask, have you tried to compress the piston downward so the plates meet? Try that. I am sure that looks correct. You should not be missing the top hat plate that sits on the lip of the piston itself, it will cause problems if you leave it off.

With my AVO's, if you have them off the car and pull the piston up then the top hat wont meet the springs as it is too high for the springs to reach. But this is irrelevant, as under load (on the car, wheels on ground) this gap is taken up by the weight of the car compressing the dampers down onto the springs. The first picture you show is simply that: A fully built up and partly compressed piston with top mount fitted.

I may be wrong, but I think you're getting yourself confused here.
